Whispers in the Graveyard

The autumn wind swept through the skeletal trees of Oakwood Cemetery, carrying with it the bitter chill of early November. For Elena and Michael, the weather matched the eternal winter in their hearts. Three years had passed since the tragic hospital fire that had claimed their newborn twin boys, Leo and Toby. Every Sunday, they knelt before the cold, weathered granite tombstone, staring at the framed photograph of the two smiling infants they never got to raise.

"I still hear them, Michael," Elena whispered, her fingers tracing the cold stone. "In my dreams, they are still crying out for us."

Michael wrapped his grey wool overcoat tighter around himself, his face etched with a grief that had aged him a decade. "I know, sweetheart. I know."

Suddenly, the soft crunch of dry leaves broke the silence. Standing a few feet away was a young blonde girl, no older than six, wearing a stained white dress that seemed far too thin for the biting cold. Her pale blue eyes were fixed on the photograph on the tombstone. She stepped closer, pointed a tiny finger, and spoke with an eerie, calm certainty.

"They're not gone," she said.

Michael gasped, his head snapping up. "What did you say?"

The girl didn't blink. "They stay with me."

Elena felt a sudden, violent jolt in her chest. She scrambled to her feet, her voice cracking. "Who? Who stays with you?"

"Both of them," the girl replied, pointing back at the photo.

Desperation, wild and terrifying, seized Michael. He grabbed the girl's small shoulders gently. "Where, sweetheart? Where are they?"

The girl began to turn away, gesturing toward the edge of the woods. "At the orphanage."

Tears spilled over Elena's cheeks, a fragile, desperate hope igniting in her soul. Michael looked at the girl, then at his weeping wife, and made his choice. "Take us there," he pleaded.
