Previously: When Emily's baby wouldn't stop crying on a crowded flight, a kind stranger stepped in to help. But his effortless touch hid a devastating past that changed both of their lives forever.

At Emily’s question, a shadow passed over David’s face. His smile faded, replaced by a quiet, lingering sorrow that seemed to stretch back for miles. Before he could answer, the silence of the cabin was broken once again by Thomas, the disgruntled passenger behind them.

The Painful Truth

“Well, at least someone knows how to handle a kid,” Thomas muttered loudly, crossing his arms. “If you can’t keep your own baby quiet, maybe you shouldn't be flying at all. It’s common courtesy.”

The rude comment hung in the air, thick and offensive. Emily shrank back into her seat, her cheeks burning with shame. But David didn't let it slide. Keeping his movements incredibly gentle so as not to wake the sleeping baby in his arms, he turned his head slightly to address Thomas. His voice was low, but it possessed an icy authority that commanded the attention of everyone in the surrounding rows.

“That is enough,” David said. “This mother is doing the absolute best she can. Raising a child is a monumental task, and the last thing she needs is your judgment.”

Thomas sneered, though he looked slightly intimidated. “Easy for you to say. It’s not your kid. You don't have to deal with the headache.”

David’s chest rose and fell with a heavy, ragged breath. He looked down at Liam’s peaceful face, then back at Thomas.

“No, he isn't my son,” David said, his voice cracking with sudden, raw emotion. “But my own son would have been his exact age today. If he were still here.”

The entire cabin seemed to fall into a dead, breathless silence. Thomas’s jaw dropped, his face instantly draining of color. He slowly sank back into his seat, completely speechless. David turned back around, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He gently transferred the sleeping Liam back into Emily’s arms, his hands trembling slightly. Emily looked at him, her heart aching for the immense pain she now recognized in his eyes.
