The Cold Asphalt

The autumn wind howled across the wet parking lot of Oak Ridge High School, carrying with it a biting chill. Sophia shivered, her fingers trembling as she scrambled to gather her scattered chemistry notes from the dirty puddle. The paper was already turning to mush, the ink bleeding like tears. Above her, the laughter of her peers echoed like a mocking chorus. At the center of it all stood Hunter, the school’s golden-boy quarterback, wearing his pristine blue and white varsity jacket with an arrogant smirk.

"Watch where you're going, loser,"
Hunter sneered, deliberately kicking a stray textbook further into the mud. The crowd of onlookers snickered, none of them daring to cross the star athlete. Sophia blinked back her tears, refusing to let them see her break. She felt entirely alone, swallowed by the bleak overcast sky.

Then, the laughter died down. A heavy silence fell over the parking lot as the back of a tall, bearded man in a tan cap and a dark hoodie cut through the crowd. He walked with an unhurried, purposeful stride directly toward the confrontation. The onlookers parted, sensing a sudden shift in the air.

Caleb stepped between Sophia and her tormentor. Standing eye-to-eye with the star athlete, Caleb didn't flinch. His expression was a mask of cold fury. He leaned in close, his voice low but carrying a quiet authority that commanded the entire lot.

"You think you're tough, huh? Pick on someone who can stand up to you,"
Caleb said firmly, staring directly into Hunter's eyes. Hunter’s smirk vanished, replaced by a defensive glare. The high-stakes standoff had begun, and nobody dared to make a sound.
