Previously: When young Caleb meets a wealthy stranger in a lobby, a simple silver watch sparks a shocking revelation about his father's heroic past and a debt waiting to be repaid.

The Unspoken Debt

Before Caleb could ask any more questions, a woman rushed through the lobby doors, her face pale with worry.

"Caleb! I told you to wait by the desk,"
Sarah gasped, her eyes darting from her son to the wealthy stranger kneeling before him. Then, she noticed the silver watch in Caleb's hands. Her breath hitched, and she stood frozen in place.

"Mom, look! He gave me his watch. He says he knew Dad,"
Caleb squealed, holding up the gleaming timepiece.

Sarah stared at William, her defensive posture suddenly softening into utter disbelief. She recognized the watch instantly. It was a replica of the one her late husband, Scott, had cherished—the one he had to sell years ago to pay for their first month of rent when they were starving.

William stood up, smoothing his suit jacket, though his hands were visibly trembling.

"Are you Scott's wife?"
he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Sarah nodded slowly, tears welling in her eyes.

"Scott passed away three years ago in an industrial accident,"
she revealed, her voice trembling.
"But how do you know him? Who are you?"

William took a deep breath. Ten years ago, long before he became a real estate mogul, William had been a desperate man living on the streets. One freezing winter night, he had collapsed from hunger and exhaustion. It was Scott, a simple construction worker, who had found him, bought him a hot meal, and given him enough money to get back on his feet. Scott had even sold his own beloved watch to fund William's first apartment deposit. William had promised to find Scott and repay him one day, but life had pulled them in different directions, and William's search had repeatedly hit dead ends.

Now, looking at Scott's widow and his fatherless son, William realized that fate had finally brought him to the family of the man who had saved his life. But he also noticed the worn fabric of Sarah's coat and the exhaustion etched into her face. They were struggling, and William knew he had to do something drastic.
