A Stranger Hands His Priceless Watch to a Boy Who Recognized It
Previously: When a wealthy businessman meets a young boy in a library who recognizes his rare silver watch, a decade-old secret is finally brought to light.
A Confrontation from the Past
Before Owen could fully grasp the heavy piece of silver in his hands, a sharp, defensive voice shattered the quiet of the library lobby. "Owen! Get away from him!" A woman in a worn wool coat rushed forward, her face pale and her eyes wide with protective panic. She grabbed Owen's shoulder, pulling him behind her as she glared at Daniel. Her hands were red from the cold, and her coat was frayed at the cuffs.
Daniel stood up slowly, his heart pounding against his ribs. As he looked at the woman's face, the years of struggle written in her eyes did not hide her identity. It was Clara, Scott’s wife. "Clara?" Daniel breathed, taking a step back. "It's me, Daniel." Clara froze, her defensive posture collapsing into a mixture of shock and bitter resentment. She looked at his expensive suit, then at the silver watch in her son's hands.
"Daniel,"
she whispered, her voice laced with pain. "What are you doing here? And why are you giving my son your expensive things?" Daniel looked at her worn shoes and Owen's oversized hoodie. The contrast between his own tailored suit and their obvious struggle was agonizing. "I've been looking for you guys for years," Daniel pleaded. "After the company collapsed, I lost touch. I wanted to help. Where is Scott?"
Clara's eyes welled with tears, and she let out a hollow, bitter laugh. "You're too late, Daniel. Scott passed away a year ago. He spent his final months in a hospital bed, fighting an illness we couldn't afford to treat. We lost the house, our savings, everything. While you were building your empire, the man who took the fall for your early business mistakes was dying in poverty. He never asked for your help because he was too proud, but you should have found us."
Daniel felt the ground slip out from under him. The man who had sacrificed his own reputation to shield Daniel from a devastating lawsuit had died thinking he was forgotten, leaving his family to suffer.
