The tension in the bakery was thick enough to cut with a knife. Thomas stepped in front of Jessica and Lily, shielding them from Marcus.

"I told you never to show your face in this city again, Marcus,"

Thomas said, his voice deadly quiet. Jessica watched in astonishment as her arrogant ex-husband cowered before the man who had saved her.

Thomas turned to the lawyer.

"I suggest you advise your client to drop this immediately. Marcus is my estranged younger brother. Five years ago, he forged our father's will, stole my entire inheritance, and left our family in ruin. I chose not to press charges back then for our mother's sake, but I still have all the evidence of his fraud in my safe,"

Thomas explained calmly.

Marcus’s lawyer looked at his client in shock. Marcus was trembling, his eyes darting toward the door. Thomas stepped closer to his brother.

"If you don't sign a document relinquishing all parental rights to Lily right now, and if you ever come near Jessica again, I will hand that evidence over to the district attorney by sunset. You will spend the next ten years in a federal prison."

Relating he was completely trapped, Marcus frantically grabbed the pen from his lawyer's hand. He signed the relinquishment papers right there on the bakery counter, grabbed his lawyer's arm, and fled the shop, never to return.

Jessica collapsed into a chair, crying tears of sheer relief. Thomas knelt beside her, gently taking her hand.

"You and Lily are safe now,"

he whispered.

"I lost my family years ago because of greed, but you two have given me a second chance at having one. I will always protect you."
