The Stranger Who Rescued Her From the Rain Had Her Mother's Locket

The rain in rural Oregon didn't just fall; it punished the earth. Clara sat on a weathered wooden crate by the shoulder of Route 9, her yellow raincoat offering little protection against the biting autumn chill. Her old sedan had died miles back, leaving her stranded with nothing but a worn canvas duffel bag and a heavy heart. She had spent the last three hours watching the gray fog swallow the pine trees, feeling utterly abandoned. She adjusted the hood of her raincoat, shivering as another wet gust of wind swept across the empty highway. The low rumble of a V8 engine broke the monotony of the pouring rain. A dark blue pickup truck, its headlights cutting through the gloomy, desaturated daylight, pulled up to the gravel shoulder. "Come on, get in out of the rain,"

he said, his voice rugged and deep, yet carrying an unexpected warmth. Clara looked up, her eyes wide with a mixture of exhaustion and caution. But the freezing wind made her decision for her.

she whispered, her voice soft and trembling. He didn't ask questions. He simply took her heavy duffel bag, his calloused hand brushing against hers, and guided her toward the passenger side.
