Previously: When Amanda's baby wouldn't stop crying on a crowded flight, a kind stranger stepped in. But his magical touch hid a devastating past that changed both of their lives forever.

The Shadow of the Past

Matthew’s smile faded, replaced by a shadow of profound grief. He stared at the tiny hand resting against his tweed jacket.

"I did," he murmured, his voice barely audible over the hum of the jet engines. "A daughter. Her name was Clara. She would have been four this year."

Amanda’s heart sank. The pain in his eyes was unmistakable. Before she could offer her condolences, Matthew explained that he had lost both his wife and daughter in a tragic accident three years ago. Since that devastating day, he had avoided children entirely, unable to bear the painful reminders of the life he had lost. Yet, seeing Amanda’s desperation had cracked open the icy walls around his heart.

Just as a peaceful silence settled over their row, Richard chimed in again from behind.

"Well, thank God the brat finally shut up. But some of us still have to endure this cramped cabin. Next time, buy a private jet if you can't control your kid."

Amanda flinched, tears welling in her eyes. She was flying to Seattle to escape a broken home, with barely any savings to her name. Richard’s cruel words cut deep into her fragile confidence.

But Matthew wasn't about to let it slide. He turned slowly to face Richard, his demeanor shifting from gentle father to commanding authority.

"Sir, this young woman is doing the best she can. If you speak to her with that tone again, I will personally ensure the security handles your disruptive behavior upon landing," Matthew warned.

Richard scoffed, but the sheer authority in Matthew’s voice made him shrink back into his seat, muttering silently. Amanda looked at Matthew, overwhelmed by his protection. For the rest of the flight, Matthew held Lily, allowing Amanda to finally close her eyes and rest. But as the plane descended toward Seattle, Amanda realized she had no idea how she was going to survive once they touched down.
