Katherine felt the cold air rush into her lungs, but it did nothing to calm the fire of confusion raging in her chest. The golden leaf pin with the blue sapphire was not a mass-produced piece of jewelry. It had been custom-designed by her grandfather for her mother, Eleanor, and her aunt, Clara. But Aunt Clara had supposedly died in a tragic car accident in a remote mountain town over thirty years ago, long before Katherine was even born. At least, that was the story Eleanor had told her for her entire life.

She looked at Owen, really looked at him. Beneath the disheveled appearance and the tear-stained cheeks, there was a haunting familiarity in his green eyes. They were the exact same shade as her own mother's.

"Who is your mother?"

Katherine asked, her voice shaking violently as she stepped into the shelter of a nearby building awning.

"Her name is Clara,"

Owen whispered, wiping his face with the sleeve of his sweatshirt.

"She's in the hospital downtown. She's... she doesn't have much time left. She gave me this pin tonight and told me to find the woman wearing the match. She said she saw you in a local newspaper article last week, wearing it at a charity gala, and knew you had to be Eleanor's daughter."

Katherine's mind raced. Clara was alive? Why had Eleanor lied to her for three decades, mourning a sister who was still drawing breath? The shock threatened to bring Katherine to her knees. She grabbed Owen's arm, no longer afraid of the stranger, but desperate for the truth.

"Take me to her,"

Katherine commanded, her maternal instincts and familial duty colliding in a storm of urgency.
