Leo stood up slowly, wiping his hands on a clean towel. He looked directly at Thomas, whose face had gone pale beneath his grey beard. Chloe looked between the two men, her mind racing. For three years, her father had taken her to the best specialists in the country, and every single one of them had concluded that her nerves were permanently damaged.

"Her nerves are perfectly healthy,"

Leo explained, his voice steady. "The numbness is being caused by a localized chemical block. Someone has been administering a highly specific neuro-inhibitor to her. It mimics permanent paralysis, but it wears off within forty-eight hours if the dosage stops."

Chloe stared at Leo in utter disbelief. Then, she turned her gaze slowly toward her father. Thomas was the only person who handled her daily medication. He was the one who insisted on giving her the special "vitamin injections" every single morning, claiming they were to prevent muscle atrophy.

"Thomas, what is he talking about?"

Chloe whispered, her voice trembling. "Is this true?"

Thomas’s defensive facade completely crumbled. He took a step back, his eyes darting around the driveway as if looking for an escape. He began to stammer, trying to find a lie that would save him, but the sheer guilt written across his face spoke louder than any words ever could.

"I did it for us, Chloe,"

Thomas finally choked out, tears streaming down his face. "After your mother passed, you wanted to move across the country to New York. I couldn't bear the thought of being left entirely alone in this giant house. I just wanted to keep you safe with me."
