The air in the 24-hour diner hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and the relentless hum of neon. Outside, Chicago wept sheets of rain, blurring the city lights into abstract streaks against the chrome-framed windows. Inside, the cracked crimson vinyl booths seemed to absorb the weary glow of the buzzing cherry-red and turquoise tubes. It was here, in this liminal space between night and day, that Leo, a man whose 68 years had etched deep grooves into his face and whose eyes saw only a milky haze behind tarnished spectacles, found a fragile peace. His fingers, gnarled yet nimble within fingerless knit gloves, coaxed a mournful melody from an instrument that had been his sole companion for decades. He was a street violinist, his world reduced to the vibrations of aged wood and the echoes of a past he could no longer see.

Suddenly, the diner door burst open, the brass bell above it clanging discordantly. Jax, a 24-year-old viral streamer with bleached-blonde hair that defied gravity and a gaudy neon-yellow puffer jacket, swaggered in, his face illuminated by the glow of his phone-rig. Arrogance radiated from him like cheap cologne. He saw Leo, saw the violin, and his eyes glinted with a predatory amusement. He strode over, his voice dripping with contempt, amplified by the microphone attached to his phone. "Nobody wants to hear your screeching garbage, old man—get out of my stream!" Before Leo could even register the threat, Jax violently snatched the violin. The antique spruce, its varnish a testament to centuries of craftsmanship, met Jax's knee with a sickening crack. Splinters flew, scattering across the wet linoleum like fallen leaves. Leo stood frozen, his breath catching in his chest, his sightless eyes widening in a silent, paralyzed grief. His empty hands reached out, grasping at the air where his livelihood, his very soul, had just been shattered.
