A Mother's Silent Sacrifice

The bright fluorescent lights of the diner buzzed softly, casting a warm glow over the booth where Katherine sat with her two children. Today was Ethan’s eighth birthday, a day that should have been filled with balloons, a large cake, and presents. Instead, Katherine’s pockets held nothing but a few crumpled bills and some loose change—barely enough to buy a single, plain hamburger from the value menu.

With careful, trembling hands, Katherine used a plastic knife to divide the burger exactly in half. She pushed one half toward Ethan and the other toward his little sister, Chloe. She forced a bright, cheerful smile onto her tired face, hiding the exhaustion that had weighed heavily on her shoulders since losing her job three months ago.

"Mom, what about you?" Ethan asked, his wide brown eyes looking up at her with innocent concern. "Aren't you going to eat?"

Katherine’s stomach rumbled painfully, but she didn’t let her smile waver. She slid the plates closer to them and took a slow sip of ice water.

"I already ate earlier, sweetie," she lied smoothly, her voice warm and reassuring. "I'm still so full. You two eat up."

Ethan’s face lit up as he picked up his half.

"This is the best birthday ever. Thank you, mom!"
he chirped. Katherine nodded, a subtle, heartbreaking sadness flickering in her eyes as she watched them eat. She was starving, but their happiness was her only priority.

A few booths away, a man in a sharp, dark suit named Thomas sat quietly. He had planned to have a quick working lunch, but his attention had been completely captured by the little family. He watched Katherine’s calculated movements, her empty plate, and the water glass she clutched like a shield. Suddenly, the truth hit him like a physical blow.

"She didn't eat?"

Thomas whispered to himself, a wave of profound concern washing over him. He looked down at his own untouched, gourmet meal, suddenly feeling a deep ache in his chest.
