The State Board Hearing Brought Brenda Lawson Face-to-Face With All Her Victims

Three weeks later, Brenda Lawson sat alone at a long table in the state education board's hearing room. Her lawyer was a young man who kept checking his phone, clearly out of his depth. She wore a grey suit now, stripped of her usual glamour, her slicked-back hair dull with sweat.

Across the room, Matteus Van Der Berg sat in the front row, Matteo beside him, the paper medal pinned to the boy's chest. Eleanor sat on his other side, a folder of documents in her lap.

The chair of the board, a stern woman with silver glasses, called the hearing to order. "Ms. Lawson, you are here to respond to allegations of verbal abuse, psychological harm, and unethical conduct toward students."

Brenda stood, her voice shaky but defiant. "These allegations are exaggerated. I am a strict teacher. That is not a crime."

Matteus didn't move. He simply nodded at Eleanor.

Eleanor stood and addressed the board. "We have compiled testimony from seven former students and their parents, spanning ten years and three schools. Additionally, we have an audio recording from the incident involving Matteo Van Der Berg."

Brenda's face drained of color. She hadn't expected witnesses.

One by one, former students took the stand. A girl with a stutter, now a college student, described how Brenda had mocked her in front of the class. A young man with a father in prison recounted the year of torment. A mother broke down as she described her son's suicide attempt after a year in Brenda's classroom.

By the time the last witness finished, the room was silent. Even the board members looked shaken.

Brenda sat frozen, her hands knotted in her lap. Her lawyer whispered something to her, but she shook her head.

The Verdict That Shattered Her — and the Secret That Set Matteo Free

The board deliberated for only twenty minutes. When they returned, the chair's voice was stone.

"Ms. Lawson, your teaching license is revoked, effective immediately. You are also prohibited from working with minors in any educational capacity in this state. We are referring this matter to the district attorney for potential criminal charges of child endangerment."

Brenda's jaw dropped. She looked at Matteus, her eyes wild. "You can't do this to me! I have rights!"

Matteus stood slowly. "You had a right to teach children. You chose to hurt them instead. That right is gone."

Brenda opened her mouth to respond, but Matteus cut her off.

"And there's something else you should know." He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document. "This is a sealed record from Pennsylvania. You were expelled for misconduct there. But what you did to your own nephew — the boy you tormented until he tried to hurt himself — that was not in your file."

Brenda went white. "You can't prove that."

"I can," Eleanor said, holding up the folder. "We have hospital records, therapist notes, and a sworn affidavit from your brother, Marcus Van Der Berg."

Brenda's hands began to shake. She turned to the board, but they were already rising, their faces grim.

"This hearing is adjourned," the chair said. "Security will escort Ms. Lawson out."

As Brenda was led away, she didn't look at anyone. She just walked, head down, her heels clicking too fast on the floor.

Matteus knelt beside Matteo. "Come on, champ. Let's go home."

Matteo looked up at him, his eyes wet but steady. "Did I do something good, Grandpa?"

Matteus smiled, his heart aching. "You did the bravest thing I've ever seen. You stood up to a bully, and you won. I'm so proud of you."

Matteo hugged him, and Matteus held on tight.

Later that week, Matteus took Matteo to the cemetery where his parents were buried. They placed the paper medal on the gravestone, and Matteo whispered, "I made this for you, Dad. I hope you can see it."

Matteus stood behind him, silent, his hand on the boy's shoulder.

And in that quiet moment, he made a promise to himself — and to the little boy who had already been through so much — that he would spend the rest of his life protecting him, come what may.

Some battles are won with words. Others with love.

Matteo had both on his side.
