The air inside the Gothic-style wooden chapel was thick with the scent of lilies and unspoken grief. At the center of the altar sat a pristine white casket, supposedly holding the remains of nineteen-year-old Clara. The mourners sat in stunned, somber silence, but seventeen-year-old Leo couldn't bear the quiet. His messy brown hair fell over his tear-stained face as he stood before the heavy wooden box, his dark charcoal suit rumpled, holding a heavy iron sledgehammer in his trembling hands.

The Desperate Strike

Before anyone could stop him, Leo raised the heavy tool and swung it down. The metal cracked against the white casket lid with a deafening splintering sound. Screams echoed through the chapel. David, a stern fifty-year-old man in a beige windbreaker jacket who had acted as Clara’s guardian, stepped forward from the front pew, his face pale with rage.

"Stop! Put that down right now, Leo!" David shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

But Leo didn't listen. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he gripped the handle tighter, raising it once more.

"You have to open it!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with pure desperation. "She's still inside! I know she is!"

With another brutal swing, the sledgehammer smashed a gaping hole into the polished wood. Shards of white lacquer flew through the air. Sarah, a blonde family friend sitting near the aisle, let out a sharp gasp, pressing her hand over her mouth.

"Oh my God," she whispered, tears springing to her eyes. "He’s lost his mind."

David’s hand slipped inside his beige jacket, pulling out a small black handgun. He pointed it directly at the teenager.

"Step away from the coffin, Leo," David warned, his voice deadly quiet. "I won't tell you again."

But Leo had already peered through the splintered hole. His breath caught. Down in the darkness of the silk-lined casket, a pair of wide, terrified brown eyes stared back up at him. It was Clara. She was alive, her mouth sealed tight with thick grey duct tape, her chest rising and falling in rapid, panicked breaths.
