The Sins of the Stepfather

For a second, the entire chapel fell into a dead, horrified silence. The sight of a living, breathing girl trapped inside her own coffin shattered the solemnity of the service. Sarah shrieked, pointing a finger at the casket as other mourners began to panic. David stood frozen, his gun still raised, but his confident facade was rapidly crumbling into desperate terror.

"She's alive!" Leo cried, dropping the sledgehammer. He scrambled to tear away the splintered wood, reaching down to rip the thick grey duct tape from his sister's mouth.

As soon as the tape was freed, Maya drew in a ragged, sobbing breath, coughing violently. "Leo... he drugged me," she gasped, her voice raw and weak. "He put me in here before the viewing. He was going to bury me alive!"

The revelation struck the chapel like a thunderbolt. Mourners turned their gazes toward David, their sorrow instantly hardening into fury. David backed toward the exit, his eyes darting around the room. He realized his elaborate plan—to fake Maya's death, claim her multi-million dollar inheritance trust, and dispose of her permanently—had just been obliterated by a sixteen-year-old boy with a sledgehammer.

"She's lying! She's unstable!" David shouted, his voice cracking as he kept the gun pointed at the crowd. "Stay back, all of you! I'm leaving, and nobody is going to stop me."

But Leo wasn't about to let the man who tried to murder his sister escape. Helping Maya sit up, Leo looked around the room, rallying the shocked family members. "He's not leaving this room!" Leo yelled, stepping in front of Maya to shield her body with his own. Sarah and several other brave mourners began to close in, cornering the desperate man.
