Previously: After losing his parents, eighteen-year-old Luke fights to keep custody of his little brother Tate. But when an estranged aunt intervenes with lies, a secret letter changes everything.

The Trap in the Gallery

Before Judge Harold could speak, Stella's high-priced attorney stood up, his polished leather shoes clicking loudly on the wooden floor. Stella, a wealthy woman who had not spoken to Luke’s family in over a decade, stepped forward. She was determined to take custody of Tate, and she was prepared to play dirty to get what she wanted.

"Your Honor," the attorney began, sliding a thick manila folder across the bench. "We have serious concerns regarding the safety of the child under the current living conditions. We have documented evidence that Luke is unfit."

Luke's heart stopped. He watched in horror as the judge opened the folder. Inside were fabricated reports from a private investigator hired by Stella. They claimed Luke had a history of skipping school, leaving Tate unattended late at night, and associating with local troublemakers. It was a calculated assassination of his character, designed to paint him as an irresponsible, dangerous teenager.

Tate began to cry, burying his face in Luke's side. "It's not true! Luke always makes me dinner! He helps me with my homework!" Tate whimpered, but the attorney ignored him, presenting a forged eviction notice from their landlord. The evidence seemed insurmountable. Judge Harold looked down at Luke, his solemn expression hardening. The warm sympathy that had filled the courtroom moments ago was rapidly evaporating.

Luke felt the room spinning. He had no lawyer, no money, and no way to disprove these systemic lies. Just as the judge prepared to hand down his ruling, Luke remembered the small backpack resting on the chair behind him. Inside was a faded blue envelope he had recovered from his mother's old desk just days after the funeral. It was a secret his mother had guarded fiercely. With trembling hands, Luke reached into his bag and pulled out the letter.
