A Fateful Encounter on Route 9

The autumn rain had turned the winding country roads into a slick, treacherous mirror. Nineteen-year-old Tyler gripped the steering wheel of his old sedan, his eyes straining against the thick, swirling mist that clung to the asphalt. He had spent the last year drifting from town to town, carrying nothing but a duffel bag and a heavy heart. Since his mother’s passing, he felt entirely disconnected from the world, searching for a ghost he wasn't even sure existed.

Suddenly, a flash of chrome in the roadside ditch caught his attention. Tyler slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching softly on the wet pavement. Through the fog, he spotted a heavy custom chopper motorcycle lying on its side. Next to it, a man lay sprawled in the damp grass, clutching his shoulder in obvious agony. Without a second thought, Tyler pulled over and ran into the drizzle, his green hoodie soaking through instantly.

As he knelt in the mud, Tyler's breath caught in his throat. The injured man was rugged, around forty-eight, wearing a denim biker vest. Stitched onto the chest was a distinctive, faded snake patch—the exact same emblem Tyler had seen in his mother's old, hidden Polaroid. Trembling, Tyler forced himself to focus on the emergency at hand.

"Hey. Are you hurt bad?" Tyler asked, his voice shaking as he looked at the man's pale face.

The biker groaned, looking down in pain. Tyler reached into his pocket, pulling out a clean white cloth, and pressed it firmly against the man's heavily bleeding shoulder. The stranger winced, but as Tyler held the pressure steady, their eyes met. A strange, warm recognition flickered in the older man's gaze.

"You didn't have to do this," the man whispered, his voice rough but incredibly gentle. "You're stronger than you think."

The words hung in the misty air, sending a strange chill down Tyler’s spine as he looked at the rugged stranger.
