A Terrified Boy Begged His Estranged Father for Protection on a Rainy Night
A Late-Night Refuge
The rain beat mercilessly against the glass of the 24-hour diner, blurring the neon sign that flickered weakly in the dark. Inside, the checkered floor was mostly empty, save for a few weary travelers and Leo. At fifty-three, Leo looked like a man who had lived several lives, his bald head reflecting the dim overhead lights, his worn leather jacket smelling of rain and old tobacco. He cradled a thick ceramic mug of black coffee, lost in his own thoughts, when the diner's bell chimed violently.
A young man burst through the door, shivering and drenched. It was Toby. He was barely twenty, his face pale and his bright green hoodie clung to his shaking frame. Rainwater mixed with the tears streaming down his face as his eyes frantically swept the diner, finally locking onto Leo. Without hesitation, Toby ran toward the red vinyl booth, sliding in opposite the older man.
"Please. Please don't let him take me," Toby begged, his voice cracking with sheer terror.
Leo’s grip on his coffee mug tightened, but his expression remained remarkably disciplined. Through the large window behind Leo, a pair of bright car headlights suddenly cut through the darkness, casting long, menacing shadows across their booth. The car had pulled up right outside, its engine idling with a low, predatory rumble.
Leo didn't look back at the headlights. Instead, he locked his intense, protective gaze onto the boy he hadn't seen in nearly a decade. He could see his own younger self in Toby’s panicked eyes, and a protective instinct he thought he had buried long ago flared to life.
"Sit down. Tell me what happened," Leo commanded calmly, his deep voice acting as an anchor in the storm.
Toby wiped his face with a trembling hand, his eyes darting toward the door as the shadow of a tall man emerged from the idling car, heading straight for the diner's entrance.
