The rain beat against the glass of the Highway 44 Diner like a relentless drum. Inside, the warm glow of neon signs did little to ease the tension building in Lily's chest. She was shivering, not from the drafty air, but from sheer terror. Her faded pink shirt clung to her damp shoulders, and her eyes darted anxiously toward the dark parking lot. Through the rain-streaked windows, she saw the headlights of a black SUV cut through the storm. They had found her.

Desperate and out of options, Lily looked around the diner. At the counter sat a row of burly men in leather vests. The largest of them was Jax, a muscular, bald biker with a thick beard and arms covered in intricate tattoos. Taking a deep breath, Lily stepped forward and tapped his shoulder.

"Um, sir?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Jax slowly turned his imposing frame, his weathered face hard but curious. He looked down at her small, shaking figure.

"What is it, kid?" Jax asked, his deep voice rumbling.

Lily swallowed hard, her eyes pleading.

"Look back," she said softly, nodding toward the entrance.

Jax glanced over his shoulder toward the glass doors where the heavy rain lashed against the panes. Through the gloom, three men in dark coats were stepping out of the SUV, their intentions clear. Jax’s expression shifted from curiosity to grim understanding. He turned back to Lily, his demeanor instantly turning protective.

"Right. Stay close," Jax muttered.

He stood up, his massive frame towering over her. With a subtle nod to his crew, Jax began leading Lily down the checkered aisle toward the back of the diner. Behind him, Cole and several other burly bikers slid off their stools, forming a human wall between Lily and the entrance.

As they walked, Jax kept a close eye on the front door.

"Nobody touches her," Jax declared, his voice leaving no room for argument.

Cole, walking right behind him, patted his pocket and nodded.

"We know," Cole responded quietly.
