The scent of stale coffee and rain-soaked wood hung heavy in the air of the mountain-side diner. Outside, a storm was brewing, but inside, a different kind of tempest was about to unfold. Zoe’s breath came in ragged, silent gasps as she curled her trembling body into the tight space beneath a corner booth. Her hands pressed firmly over her mouth, desperately trying to stifle the sobs that threatened to escape. Tears tracked through the dust on her cheeks, her grey sweatshirt damp from the frantic run through the woods. Beside her sat a single, rugged work boot, belonging to the elderly stranger who sat above her.

Suddenly, the diner's bell chimed with a violent rattle. Heavy footsteps echoed on the floorboards.

"A girl ran in here, where is she?"

The voice belonged to Jake. He stood in the center of the room, his black polo shirt damp, his eyes scanning the tables with predatory intensity. He stopped right before the booth where Frank, a weathered man with a short white beard, sat quietly nursing a mug of black coffee. Jake leaned in, his posture radiating a quiet, dangerous authority.

Frank slowly raised his eyes, entirely unbothered by the younger man's aggressive stance. He took a slow sip before speaking.

"Why would she run from you?"

Jake’s jaw tightened. He glanced toward the kitchen, then leaned down closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"This is family business."

Beneath the table, Zoe squeezed her eyes shut, her entire body shaking. She braced herself for the moment she would be dragged back into the nightmare. But then, a rough, warm hand reached down into the shadows. Frank’s calloused fingers gently closed over Zoe's trembling hand, offering a silent, solid anchor.

Up above, Frank looked Jake dead in the eye, his expression hardening into stone.

"Not anymore," Frank said firmly.
