Previously: When Chloe fled into a stormy diner to escape her pursuers, she had no idea the burly biker she begged for protection held the key to her forgotten past.

The Confrontation at the Counter

The heavy glass doors of the diner flew open, letting in a gust of freezing wind and rain. Three men in matching dark suits stepped inside, led by Silas, a cruel-faced man with cold eyes. Silas wiped the rain from his forehead and scanned the diner, his gaze landing instantly on Chloe, who was hiding behind Marcus’s massive frame.

"Well, well," Silas sneered, stepping forward. "There you are, Chloe. You’ve caused us a lot of trouble tonight. Step away from the grease-monkeys and come home. We have unfinished business regarding your mother's estate."

Marcus didn't move an inch. He crossed his massive arms, a wall of muscle and leather blocking Silas’s path. The other bikers fanned out, forming an impenetrable human barrier around the young woman.

"The lady isn't going anywhere with you," Marcus rumbled, his voice dripping with menace. "I suggest you turn around and walk out before things get messy."

Silas laughed, a dry, mocking sound, and reached inside his jacket. But before he could draw whatever he was holding, Chloe reached out and gripped Marcus's leather vest to steady herself. As she did, a silver locket slipped from her wet collar, dangling in the warm overhead light.

Marcus’s eyes fell upon the locket. It was a uniquely crafted silver piece shaped like a roaring wolf, with a tiny emerald chip for an eye. His breath hitched. His tough exterior cracked, revealing a flash of absolute shock. He knew that locket. He had hand-carved it himself twenty-two years ago before he was wrongfully sent to federal prison.

He turned his head slightly, looking at Chloe’s face with a sudden, fierce intensity. He saw the shape of her jaw, the unique amber flecks in her green eyes—eyes he had spent two decades dreaming about. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

"Your mother..." Marcus whispered, his voice suddenly thick with emotion. "Was her name Clara?"

Chloe stared at him, her eyes widening in shock. "Yes," she whispered. "How did you know?"

she whispered. "How did you know?"
