Gary’s face flushed a deep, angry red. He took another step forward, trying to peer around Marcus’s broad shoulders to reach Chloe, who was sobbing silently into the back of Marcus's leather vest. Marcus didn't budge an inch. He kept his hands visible but clenched into loose fists, ready to defend the child if necessary. He knew that reacting with violence would only make things worse, but he was not about to let this aggressive man lay a finger on the terrified girl.

"She is my daughter!" Gary hissed, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "You have no right to interfere. I'm warning you, biker, step aside or you'll regret it."

But Marcus had spent years working with troubled youth, and he knew the signs of a terrified child. Chloe wasn't throwing a typical grocery-store tantrum; she was in genuine, mortal fear. Moreover, as Marcus looked down at Chloe again, he noticed her tiny hand making a subtle gesture—tucking her thumb into her palm and folding her fingers over it. That was all the confirmation Marcus needed. He looked up at Gary, his eyes cold as ice.

"If she’s your daughter, why is she begging a stranger to save her from you?" Marcus asked quietly. "And why is she showing me the emergency distress signal?"

Gary’s eyes widened slightly in panic. He tried to grab Chloe’s arm forcibly, but Marcus grabbed Gary's wrist in a grip of iron. Just then, the store manager, who had been alerted by the commotion, rushed down the aisle with two security guards. Close behind them were two local police officers who happened to be taking their lunch break near the front of the store. Gary immediately tried to play the victim, shouting that the biker was trying to kidnap his child, but Marcus remained perfectly calm.
