Chloe's hands shook violently inside her thin gloves. The winter wind howled across the snow-dusted courtyard of Saint Jude’s Parish, biting through her blue jacket and making her shiver to her bones. She clutched the straps of her heavy backpack, feeling the weight of her entire life resting on her shoulders. Behind her, the heavy wooden doors of the brick church creaked open. Father Thomas, the gentle priest who had hidden her for the past two days from her predatory stepfather, stepped out onto the stone steps. "You'll be fine. Breathe, kiddo," he murmured, his voice a warm anchor in the freezing air. Chloe tried to nod, but her throat was tight with sheer terror. She was running out of time, and she knew it.

Suddenly, a low rumble vibrated through the asphalt, growing into a deafening roar. Chloe’s heart leaped into her throat as a fleet of gleaming motorcycles rounded the corner, kicking up flurries of dry snow. They looked incredibly intimidating, a wall of black leather and chrome against the stark white landscape. Leading the pack was a man who exuded quiet, undeniable authority. He rode a sleek, dark chopper, stopping just feet away from where she stood in the cold.

The man killed the engine. He wore a heavy leather jacket, and his face was shielded by dark sunglasses despite the overcast winter sky. Slowly, he pushed his sunglasses down, revealing sharp, compassionate blue eyes. This was Marcus. He looked at the trembling girl, then glanced up at Father Thomas, who gave a subtle, reassuring nod of approval.

Marcus turned his attention back to Chloe, his expression softening into something resembling an old friend. "Hey there. Looking for a ride?" he asked, his deep voice surprisingly gentle.

Chloe stared at him, the fear inside her suddenly melting into a desperate hope. She looked back at the church, then at the rugged men and women waiting behind Marcus. They weren't here to hurt her; they were her only way out. She swallowed hard, a small, relieved smile breaking through her frozen expression. "I... guess I am," she replied.

guess I am," she replied.
