Previously: A greedy trustee shoves a barefoot girl aside to claim a fortune — but when the child whispers a secret about a golden key, the heirloom reveals a truth that changes everything.

The Second Key Was Hidden in the Archive Ledger, and It Pointed to a Name No One Expected

The salon fell into a strange silence after the guards left. Lorenzo's arms were still around Clara, but the child's body had gone tense. She kept staring at the mahogany desk, where the torn pieces of the forged contract lay scattered.

"What do you mean, not working alone?" Sofia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She cupped Clara's face in her hands, searching her eyes for answers.

Clara pulled away gently and limped toward the desk. She climbed onto the chair Mrs. Vance-Gable had occupied, reached under the leather blotter, and pulled out a thin brass key — the second key. It was tarnished, old, and etched with the same intricate pattern as the locket's keyhole.

"She kept it here," Clara said, holding it up. "The day she brought me here, she told me if I ever told anyone, she'd hurt my auntie."

Lorenzo's expression darkened. "Your auntie?"

"The woman who raised me," Clara said. "She's not my real mother. She found me on the riverbank twelve years ago, with this locket around my neck. She kept me safe, but she was scared. She said the people who took me were still looking."

Sofia stumbled backward, her hand flying to her mouth. "The riverbank... that's where they found the empty carriage. Our daughter's carriage."

Lorenzo took the key from Clara, his fingers trembling. "What does this open?"

Clara pointed to the painting of Sofia's mother, hanging above the fireplace. "Behind it. There's a hidden safe. The key fits."

The security officers exchanged glances. One of them stepped forward. "Sir, should I call the police back?"

"Not yet," Lorenzo said. He crossed the room, pulled the painting aside, and revealed a small iron safe embedded in the stone wall. The key turned with a click that seemed to echo through the salon.

Inside was a stack of documents, worn at the edges. Lorenzo pulled them out, his eyes scanning the pages. His face went pale.

"What is it?" Sofia asked, rushing to his side.

"Bank transfers," he said, his voice hollow. "From a private account... to Mrs. Vance-Gable's name. They go back twelve years. Right to the month our daughter disappeared."

Sofia grabbed the documents. The account holder's name was printed at the top of every page: Moretti Family Trust.

"But that's impossible," Sofia whispered. "The trust is controlled by..."

"By my brother," Lorenzo finished. "Marcus. He's been managing the trust since my father died."

Clara slid off the chair and walked over to them, her ankle brace clicking on the flagstones. She looked up at Lorenzo with eyes that held too much knowledge for a six-year-old. "The lady with the pearls said the key was a backup. She said if the adoption plan failed, the key would make sure the money still found its way to her."

Lorenzo's fists clenched. He turned to the security officers. "Get my car. We're going to my brother's office."

"And the woman in the cell?" the officer asked.

"She stays there," Lorenzo said. "But I want her watched. If she talks, I want to know. If she doesn't, I'll make sure she has plenty of time to think about it."

Clara tugged at his sleeve. "Auntie... she's still at home. She doesn't know I'm here. She'll be scared when I don't come back."

Sofia knelt down and took Clara's hands. "We'll bring her here. She raised our daughter. She's family now."

Clara's eyes filled with tears. For the first time, she let herself believe that maybe, just maybe, the running was over.

But as they prepared to leave, the salon doors burst open. A tall man in a sharp grey suit stepped inside, flanked by two lawyers. His face was a darker mirror of Lorenzo's — but his smile was all shark.

"Brother," Marcus Moretti said, spreading his arms. "I heard you found a stray. How touching."

His gaze landed on Clara. For a split second, something cold flickered in his eyes. Then it was gone, replaced by practiced charm.

"But I'm afraid we have a problem," Marcus continued. "You see, that little girl isn't your daughter. I just received a call from the police station — apparently, Mrs. Vance-Gable has made a confession. And she's named you as the mastermind."

Lorenzo stiffened. "What?"

Marcus pulled out his phone and showed a screen. On it was a video of Mrs. Vance-Gable, sobbing, claiming Lorenzo had paid her to fake the adoption to avoid a divorce settlement with Sofia.

"It's all over the news," Marcus said, almost sympathetically. "I'm sorry, Lorenzo. But you're under arrest."

The security officers hesitated. Lorenzo's eyes locked on his brother, and in that moment, he understood. The confession was a lie. But the evidence was planted, and the story was already spinning.

Clara looked at Marcus, then at the locket still hanging from her neck. She pressed the tiny golden key again. The lullaby chimed — but this time, a hidden compartment slid open at the base of the pendant.

Inside was a tiny SD card.

She held it up, her voice clear as a bell. "The lady with the pearls said this was the real proof. She said if she ever got caught, this would burn everyone."

Marcus's smile vanished.

Lorenzo took the SD card from Clara's hand, his eyes never leaving his brother's. "Let's see what's on it."

Marcus lunged forward, but the security officers moved faster. They grabbed him before he could reach the card, pinning his arms behind his back.

"You'll never get away with this," Marcus spat. "That card is encrypted. You'll never break it."

But Clara smiled — a small, fierce smile. "It's not encrypted. The lady said the password is the date I was taken."

Sofia gasped. "That's... that's our anniversary."

Lorenzo's hands shook as he held the card. He looked at Clara, at the little girl who had been stolen from him, who had survived twelve years in shadows, and who had just handed him the key to everything.

"Auntie said I should never forget the date," Clara said softly. "She said it was the day my real family lost everything. But now... now they found me."

Lorenzo pulled her close, burying his face in her hair. "We found you," he whispered. "And we're never letting go."

The security officers dragged Marcus out, his protests echoing down the hallway. But as the doors slammed shut, Lorenzo knew this was only the beginning. The SD card held secrets that could destroy more than one family.

And Clara, the barefoot girl with the star birthmark, was the only one who could unlock them all.
