Previously: When sixty-four-year-old Helen walked into the notorious highway bar, she knew she was risking her life. But the moment she unzipped her jacket, the toughest bikers fell to their knees.

The Secrets of the Iron Phantoms

Brick grabbed Helen's elbow, his grip surprisingly gentle, and guided her away from the prying eyes of the bar into the back office. He shut the heavy wooden door, cutting off the noise of the jukebox. The room was cluttered with old tires, whiskey bottles, and framed photos of the club's early days.

"You shouldn't have come here, Helen,"

Brick said, pacing the room.

"The people who wanted Jesse gone... they are still watching. If they see you with that vest, everything we sacrificed will be for nothing."
"I don't care about the club, Brick!"

Helen shouted, tears finally spilling over her cheeks.

"I care about my husband! Twenty years I spent wondering if he was dead in a ditch. You all told me you knew nothing. You lied to me!"

Brick stopped pacing. He looked at her, his rugged face softening with genuine remorse. He walked over to a heavy iron safe in the corner, spun the dial, and pulled out a thick, leather-bound journal. He handed it to Helen. With trembling hands, Helen opened it. Inside were dozens of photographs. They weren't of biker runs or gang operations. They were of her. There was a photo of her gardening in her backyard from five years ago. Another of her at her sister's funeral. Even a recent one of her sitting on her front porch, drinking tea.

"Jesse never left you because he stopped loving you,"

Brick explained quietly.

"He left because the syndicate we were fighting threatened to burn your house down with you in it. He made a deal. He went into hiding to draw them away. But he never stopped watching over you. I was his eyes here, making sure you were safe."

Helen clutched the journal to her chest, her heart breaking all over again.

"Where is he, Brick? Is he still alive?"

Brick hesitated, looking at the door, before dropping a bombshell.

"He's alive, Helen. But he's in a federal witness protection facility, and he's dying. He has weeks left."
