The Billionaire on the Sidewalk: How a Lost Ring Exposed a Deadly Family Secret
Previously: When Grace proposed to a scarred homeless man on a busy sidewalk, she didn't expect her corrupt uncle to arrive with armed guards to stop him from remembering his true identity.
The Shadow of the Past
Grace threw herself over Andrew, shielding his fragile body with her own. "Get away from him!" she screamed, but the guards were relentless. They pulled her back, their grip like iron. Out of the SUV stepped Richard Avery, Grace's power-hungry uncle, his face a mask of cold fury.
"Grace, stand down," Richard commanded, his voice dripping with false authority. "This man is a vagrant and a trespasser. He is mentally unstable. Guards, take him to the facility immediately."
Andrew was clutching his temples, groaning as a torrent of long-buried memories flooded his mind. The gold emblem had acted as a key, unlocking the dark vault of his amnesia. He saw fire. He heard the screeching of metal. He saw a hand cutting the brake lines of his sports car five years ago—and the face attached to that hand belonged to the man standing right in front of him.
"Richard..." Andrew gasped, his voice suddenly losing its gravelly edge, replaced by a hauntingly familiar tone. "The bridge... you were there."
Richard’s face drained of color. He gestured frantically to his men. "He’s speaking nonsense! Put him in the car now!"
But Grace was already standing, her tears drying as anger took over. She pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. "I am live-streaming this to the entire Avery board of directors," she announced, holding the screen high. "If you touch him, you destroy yourselves."
The guards hesitated, looking between Richard and the phone. Andrew slowly stood up, pushing off the dirty concrete. Though his clothes were tattered, his posture began to shift. The defeated, slouched posture of a homeless man vanished, replaced by the imposing stature of a leader. He stared directly into Richard's eyes, and for the first time in five years, the true Andrew Avery returned.
