Previously: At a lavish gala, a grieving mother hears a haunting lullaby sung by a busboy. The melody is achingly familiar, stirring a forgotten pain and a desperate search for a child long lost.

A Mother's Desperate Pursuit

My composure, a carefully constructed facade I’d worn for fifteen years, crumbled in an instant. The polite smiles and empty pleasantries of the gala vanished, replaced by a primal, urgent need. I moved across the polished marble, the rustle of my silk gown a stark contrast to the boy’s ragged attire. Tears, hot and stinging, welled in my eyes, blurring the opulent surroundings. “Where did you learn that lullaby?” My voice, when it finally came, was a choked whisper, raw with an emotion I had long suppressed. The boy flinched, his slender shoulders hunching as if bracing for a blow. He met my gaze, his hazel eyes holding a depth of guardedness that spoke volumes of his past. His jaw tightened, a flicker of street-honed survival instinct warring with the ancient melody he carried.

Before I could press further, a shadow fell between us. The head butler, a man whose arrogance was as finely tailored as his uniform, stepped forward. With a brutal shove, he sent Jason sprawling onto the floor. The dull thud echoed the shattering of my hope. “Get off me! I didn’t steal anything!” The boy’s voice, laced with defiant pain, cut through the air. My breath hitched, my nostrils flaring. Righteous fury, a long-dormant fire, ignited within me. I saw not a busboy, but a child, vulnerable and threatened. As the butler raised his fist, ready to strike the fallen child, I didn’t hesitate. Explosive velocity propelled me forward. I intercepted his wrist, my grip a vise, before delivering a slap that cracked across his face, whipping his head sideways.

“Touch one hair on this child and I will ruin your life!”

My voice was a venomous roar, a command that froze the room. The butler stumbled back, clutching his reddening cheek, his eyes wide with terrified submission. But my attention was already back on the boy. As he slowly pushed himself up, my gaze fell to his frayed canvas trouser leg. Pushed up past a scuffed boot, I saw it: a tarnished, hand-engraved antique silver ankle chain. And on it, emblazoned with breathtaking clarity, was my family’s sacred crest. My heart seized. The boy, Jason, spoke, his voice now quivering, vulnerable. “This silver ankle chain is the only thing I have left of my mother…” The world tilted. I dropped to my knees, the cold marble a stark contrast to the burning realization consuming me. My chin trembled, tears spilling down my pale cheeks as I stared at the crest, the undeniable symbol of my lost child.
