Previously: A cruel orphanage director shoves a disabled girl away from wealthy adopters. But when the billionaire sees the birthmark on her wrist, he drops to his knees—she's the daughter they lost five years ago.

The Cellar Held More Than Darkness

Nathaniel's blood ran cold. He looked at the cellar door, which was still slightly ajar, a sliver of darkness visible beyond.

"What's down there?" he asked Daisy, his voice gentle.

Daisy shivered. "The bad room. Where she puts us when we're bad. But there are other kids. They've been there for a long time."

Genevieve's hand flew to her mouth. "Oh my God."

Nathaniel handed Daisy to his wife and turned to the guards, who were holding the struggling Madame Vane.

"Open that door," he ordered.

One of the guards released Madame Vane and approached the cellar door, pulling it open with a creak that echoed through the conservatory.

The smell hit them first—stale air, sweat, and something sour, like old fear.

The guard pulled out a flashlight and descended the stairs. A moment later, he called up, "There are children down here. At least a dozen."

Nathaniel's jaw tightened. "Call the authorities. Now."

Madame Vane began to scream, thrashing against the other guard. "You can't do this! Those children are legally mine!"

"Not anymore," Nathaniel said.

Within hours, the conservatory was swarming with police and social workers. The children were brought up from the cellar, blinking in the light, their faces pale and hollow.

Daisy recognized some of them—the ones she had played with in the yard, the ones who had disappeared one day and never come back.

She clung to Genevieve's hand, her small fingers wrapped around her mother's pearls.

"Are they going to be okay?" she asked.

"Yes," Genevieve said, her voice thick with emotion. "They're going to be just fine."

Madame Vane was taken away in handcuffs, her face twisted with rage. As she was led past the Thornes, she spat, "You think you've won? You'll never be free of me. I know things about your family—"

"I don't care what you know," Nathaniel said. "You're finished."

And she was.

The trial was swift. The security footage, the nurse's testimony, and the testimony of the children themselves were enough to convict Madame Vane of multiple counts of child trafficking, fraud, and abuse.

She was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

But the story didn't end there.

When Nathaniel and Genevieve brought Daisy home to their estate—a sprawling mansion with a marble fountain and gardens that seemed to go on forever—she stood in the grand foyer, her leg brace clicking against the polished floor, and looked up at the towering ceiling.

"This is my palace?" she asked.

Genevieve knelt down, brushing a curl from Daisy's face. "Yes, sweetheart. This is your home."

Daisy looked at the silver stag locket on Nathaniel's chest, then at her own wrist, where the heart-shaped birthmark seemed to glow in the light.

"My daddy gave me this," she said, touching the mark.

Nathaniel smiled, tears in his eyes. "And your daddy will never leave you again."

Months later, the Thornes started a foundation for disabled orphans, using their fortune to give children like Daisy the love and care they deserved.

Daisy grew up surrounded by warmth, her leg brace eventually replaced with a lighter one, her heart healed by parents who never stopped fighting for her.

And every night, before she went to sleep, she would look at the locket on her father's dresser—the one with her baby photo—and whisper, "My daddy gave me this."

Because he had.

He had given her life, a second time.
