Previously: When a wealthy couple visits an adoption agency, they spot a tiny birthmark on a quiet girl's wrist. It's the same mark as their lost daughter's. But the director won't let her go without a fight.

The Reunion That Almost Didn't Happen

Within hours, the police arrived and took Director Thorne into custody. Margaret, the nurse, was arrested as well, but not before she gave a full confession, detailing how Isabella had paid her to take the baby from the hospital and leave her at the orphanage. The story was so shocking that it made the evening news.

Edward and Beatrice spent the night at a hotel with Sophie, who was too overwhelmed to sleep. She kept touching their faces, as if she couldn't believe they were real. The next morning, they drove to the hospital where Isabella was recovering from a sudden "relapse."

But when they arrived, the room was empty. A nurse told them that Isabella had checked out the night before, against medical advice. The only trace she left was a note on the pillow, written in her elegant script:

"You found the girl. But you'll never find me. Enjoy your new family while it lasts."

Edward crumpled the note, his jaw tight. "She's running."

Beatrice looked at him, her eyes hard. "She can't run forever. We have proof of what she did."

Sophie tugged at Beatrice's sleeve. "Is the bad lady gone?"

Beatrice knelt down and took her hands. "Yes, sweetheart. She can't hurt us anymore."

But even as she said it, a flicker of doubt crossed her face. Isabella had always been cunning. But then Sophie smiled—a tiny, fragile smile—and all the fear melted away.

Over the next few months, the Hawthornes did everything they could to make Sophie feel at home. They bought her a new room decorated with fairies and princesses, took her to the beach for the first time, and read her bedtime stories every night. Sophie slowly started to open up, asking questions about her real family, about the story of her birth.

One evening, as they sat on the porch watching the sunset, Sophie turned to Edward. "Did you ever think you'd find me?"

Edward pulled her onto his lap. "Every day. For twelve years, I never stopped looking. And now you're here, and I'm never letting go."

Beatrice joined them, wrapping her arms around both of them. "You're our miracle, Sophie."

Sophie leaned her head against Beatrice's shoulder. "I always knew you'd come."

But the peace didn't last. A week later, a private investigator knocked on their door with news that made Edward's blood run cold. Isabella had been spotted in a small town in Mexico, using a fake passport. And she had been in contact with someone inside the orphanage—someone who was still free.

Edward immediately called his security team, but before he could hang up, his phone buzzed with an unknown number. He answered, and a familiar voice purred through the speaker.

"Hello, brother. Did you miss me?"

Edward's grip tightened on the phone. "Isabella. You're not going to get away with this."

Isabella laughed. "I already have. You see, I filed a legal claim to Eleanor's custody. Since I'm her aunt, and I'm the one who 'rescued' her from those horrible people who abandoned her, the courts might just believe me."

Beatrice grabbed the phone from Edward. "You're insane."

"Maybe," Isabella said, her voice cold. "But I'm also rich and bored. And I think it's time I met my niece."

The line went dead.

Beatrice looked at Edward, her face pale. "She's coming back."

Edward wrapped his arms around her, his mind racing. "We won't let her take Sophie. I'll hire the best lawyers money can buy. We'll fight this."

But in the other room, Sophie was watching them through the doorway, her small fists clenched. She had heard everything. And she wasn't going to let anyone take her away from her real parents—not again.

That night, Sophie waited until her parents were asleep, then crept down the stairs to the kitchen. She picked up the phone and dialed the number she'd memorized from the news broadcast—the number for the detective who had handled her parents' case.

"Hello?" she whispered. "My name is Eleanor Hawthorne. And I need to tell you something about my aunt."

What she said next would send shockwaves through the investigation, and it would change everything.

But that's a story for another day—the day Sophie Hawthorne finally took control of her own fate.

For now, she was just a little girl who had found her way home, and nothing was going to take that away from her.
