Previously: Elena thought her son died at birth, but five years later, a little boy crashes into her with open arms. A slap, a shocking confession, and a truth that changes everything.

The Woman in Emerald Demanded Her Son Back, and the Whole Lobby Watched

The woman in the emerald gown pulled herself to her feet, her eyes wild, her pearls swinging like a broken necklace. "That is my son!" she spat, pointing at the boy. "I raised him. I fed him. I loved him! You can't just—"

"Margaret, stop," Henrik said, his voice carrying a warning. "You know the truth. You've always known."

Margaret's face contorted. "I know nothing! I know I'm his mother—the only mother he's ever known!"

The boy looked between them, his brow furrowed. "Mommy?" he said, tugging at Elena's coat. "Why is Aunt Margaret yelling?"

Aunt Margaret. The word hit Elena like a slap. She looked down at her son—her son—and saw the confusion in his eyes. He didn't understand. How could he? He was five years old, and his whole world was crumbling around him.

Elena knelt, bringing herself to his level. "What's your name, sweetheart?" she asked, her voice soft.

"Liam," he said, his bottom lip trembling. "Liam Dahl."

Dahl. She looked up at Henrik, and the puzzle pieces began to snap together. "You took him," she breathed. "You took my son and you raised him as your own?"

Henrik's face was pale, his hands raised in a gesture of surrender. "It wasn't like that. Please, Elena. Let me explain."

"Explain what?" she demanded, rising to her feet. "Explain how you told a grieving mother her baby was dead? Explain how you stood in that courtroom and lied under oath?"

Henrik swallowed hard. "I was protecting you."

"Protecting me?" Elena laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "You destroyed me."

Margaret stepped forward, her voice shaking. "He isn't your son. He's mine. I've been his mother since he was three days old. You can't just come in here and claim him."

"Claim him?" Elena's voice rose. "I gave birth to him! I held him for exactly four minutes before they took him away. I named him. I loved him. And you—" she turned to Henrik, "—you told me he died."

Margaret's composure cracked. "I was barren," she whispered. "I couldn't have children. And Henrik—" she looked at him with a mixture of anger and desperation, "—Henrik gave me a child. He gave me a purpose. He gave me a son."

Elena felt the world tilt. "You knew," she said, staring at Margaret. "You knew he was stolen, and you didn't care."

"I cared!" Margaret cried. "I loved him more than you ever could! You were just a teenager, alone and scared. I gave him everything—a home, a family, a future!"

"A family built on lies," Elena said. "He should have been with me."

Liam started to cry, his small shoulders shaking. "I don't understand!" he wailed. "Why is everyone yelling?"

Elena knelt again, pulling him into her arms. "I'm sorry, baby," she murmured. "I'm so sorry. This is a lot to take in."

Henrik crouched beside them, his voice low and urgent. "Elena, I know I can't undo what I did. But I've been trying to tell you the truth for years. I sent you letters. I made phone calls. You never responded."

"Because I thought my son was dead!" she shot back. "I moved on. I tried to heal. And now you're telling me it was all a lie?"

"It was a mistake, Elena. A terrible, unforgivable mistake. I was young and scared. I thought I was doing the right thing."

"The right thing?" Elena shook her head. "You took my baby. There is no right thing in that."

Margaret wiped her eyes, her voice steadying. "Whatever you think you want, you need to understand something. Liam has a life here. He has a school, friends, a routine. You can't just rip him away from everything he knows."

Elena looked at her son, at his tear-streaked face, at the fear and confusion in his eyes. Margaret was right. She couldn't just take him. But she couldn't leave him either. Not now. Not when she knew the truth.

"I'm not going anywhere," she said, her voice firm. "I don't know how this ends, but I'm not walking away from my son again."

Henrik's phone buzzed. He glanced at it, and his face went pale. "We need to go. Now."

"What?" Margaret demanded. "What's wrong?"

"It's the lawyer," Henrik said, his voice tight. "Someone leaked the story. It's already on the news."

Elena's blood ran cold. "What?"

Henrik looked at her, his eyes filled with dread. "The world is about to find out about Liam. And if we don't act fast, we could lose him to the system entirely."

Margaret's face crumpled. "No. No, this can't be happening."

Liam looked up at Elena, his voice small and scared. "Mommy? Are you going to take me away?"

Elena's heart shattered. She pulled him close, pressing a kiss to his hair. "No, sweetheart. I'm going to fight for you. I promise."

But even as she said it, she had no idea how she was going to keep that promise. The world was about to descend on them, and the truth was more complicated than anyone could have imagined.
