Previously: On a quiet Christmas Eve flight, Clara boarded a plane searching for the daughter she gave up eighteen years ago. She never expected the pilot to hold the final piece of the puzzle.

An Encounter at Thirty Thousand Feet

The seatbelt sign dinged, signaling they had reached cruising altitude. Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She couldn't sit still. Standing up, she made her way toward the galley at the front of the cabin, hoping for a private moment with the young woman.

Evelyn, the flight attendant, was busy preparing the beverage cart. She turned and smiled as Clara approached. "Is everything alright, ma'am?"

"I... I couldn't help but notice your locket," Clara said, her voice barely a whisper. "It’s beautiful. May I ask where you got it?"

Evelyn’s smile softened into something more personal. "Oh, thank you. It’s actually the only thing I have from my biological mother. I was adopted as a baby. I'm actually flying to Seattle today to meet a private investigator who thinks he found her."

Tears welled in Clara's eyes. Before she could confess her identity, the heavy curtain to the cockpit parted. Captain Thomas Vance stepped into the galley. His eyes locked onto Clara, ignoring the instruments and checklists.

"Evelyn, could you check on the cabin in row twelve?" Thomas asked, his voice steady but thick with emotion.
"Of course, Captain," Evelyn said, slipping past them.

Once they were alone, Thomas turned to Clara. "Clara. I can't believe it's you," he whispered, his eyes searching her face. "I've been looking for you for years."

"Thomas," Clara cried softly. "Our baby... I was told she was adopted by a family in Oregon. But she has my locket. How is she here? How do you know her?"

Thomas took a deep breath, his expression a mixture of guilt and relief. "Because she didn't go to strangers, Clara. When I found out what your parents did, it was too late to stop the adoption. But I couldn't let our daughter grow up without knowing who she was. I tracked her down, and when the adoptive parents fell on hard times, I helped raise her. I became her godfather, her protector. I promised myself I would bring her to you when the time was right."
