Previously: Julian fakes a coma to expose his aunt's greed. She steals from his safe and threatens his niece—until he snaps awake, catches her wrist, and reveals the whole thing was a trap.

The Final Reckoning

The police station was buzzing with activity when Julian and Nora walked in, the USB drive clutched in his hand. They had called ahead, spoken to Detective Sarah Thompson, a woman with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense attitude. She met them at the front desk, her expression grim.

"Mr. Cross," she said, extending her hand. "We've been waiting for you. Your aunt's arraignment is tomorrow morning, but I have a feeling you have something that might change the game."

Julian handed her the USB drive. "It's all there," he said. "Emails, bank records, even a photo of her meeting with a man named Viktor Petrov. He's a known associate of the Eastern European syndicate. I think he was the one who... arranged my sister's accident."

Detective Thompson's eyes widened. She plugged the drive into her computer, scrolling through the files. The silence stretched, heavy and tense.

"This is... substantial," she said finally. "This is more than enough to reopen the investigation into your sister's death."

Nora squeezed Julian's hand. "She killed Mommy?"

Julian knelt down, meeting her eyes. "We're going to make sure she pays for it, sweetheart. I promise."

The next morning, the courtroom was packed. Lydia stood at the defendant's table, her black lace dress replaced by a plain gray suit, her ruby ring conspicuously absent. She had hired the best defense attorney in the city, a silver-haired man named Jonathan Pierce who had never lost a case.

Julian sat in the front row, Nora beside him. He could feel Lydia's glare burning into him, but he didn't flinch. He had waited too long for this moment.

The prosecutor laid out the evidence methodically: the financial records showing years of embezzlement, the emails revealing a plot to silence Emily Cross, and the photo of Lydia meeting with Petrov just days before the "accident."

Lydia's face remained impassive, but Julian saw the slight tremor in her hands as she gripped the table. She was scared.

When it was Julian's turn to testify, he walked to the stand with a calm he didn't feel. He told the story of the fake coma, the hidden cameras, the recording watch. He described the moment he had caught her wrist, the look of terror in her eyes.

"She thought I was helpless," he said, his voice steady. "But I was watching. I was listening. And I was waiting."

Lydia's attorney object, but the judge overruled. Julian continued, "My aunt murdered my sister to cover her theft. She stole from our family, and she tried to steal from my niece. But she made one mistake."

He looked directly at Lydia. "She underestimated me."

The jury deliberated for only four hours before returning a verdict of guilty on all counts. Lydia's face crumpled as the judge sentenced her to twenty-five years to life.

As the bailiffs led her out, she caught Julian's eye. Her lips moved, but no sound came out. Julian read the words: "This isn't over."

But Julian knew it was. He walked out of the courthouse with Nora in his arms, the sun breaking through the clouds after days of rain.

"She's going to jail," Nora whispered. "She can't hurt us anymore."

Julian hugged her tight. "She can't."

They walked to the car, and Julian paused, looking back at the courthouse. He thought of Emily, of all the years she had protected him, and he whispered, "I did it, sis. I got her."

Nora looked up at him. "Can we go home now?"

Julian smiled. "Yes. We can go home."

As they drove away, the music box sat on the back seat, its hidden compartment now empty. The lullaby it had been meant to play would never be heard, but Julian knew that Emily's spirit lived on in Nora, in the courage she had shown in the face of greed and cruelty.

And as the city skyline faded in the rearview mirror, Julian made a silent vow: he would never let anyone hurt his family again.

The end.
