Previously: I was just a banquet server at a ruthless private club when a billionaire's baby reached for me. Then he whispered my name — the name of the son stolen from me 300 days ago.

The Ten-Month Secret

The suite was all dark wood and leather, a fireplace crackling in the corner. Roman set the baby — Leo, he called him — into a bassinet, then turned to face me. He looked different up close, less like a predator and more like a man carrying a weight he couldn't put down.

"Your name is Ella Hart," he said, not a question. "You were married to Marcus Hart."

I nodded, my mouth dry. "How do you know that?"

Roman poured himself a whiskey, his hand steady. "Because Marcus owed me four million dollars. He came to me with a proposition — his unborn child, sold for debt relief. He said you were unstable, that you'd never be fit to raise a baby."

I felt the air leave my lungs. "I was told my son died. The hospital said he had complications, that he didn't make it."

"He lied," Roman said flatly. "I paid him in cash, and he signed away every right. I didn't know you were innocent until tonight. I saw your name tag, and I knew."

I looked at Leo, sleeping peacefully, his tiny chest rising and falling. "Why did you keep him if you knew he wasn't yours?"

Roman's jaw tightened. "Because I couldn't have children. My wife left me when she found out. I wanted a son, and Marcus gave me one. I didn't ask questions." He paused. "But you're his mother. You have a right to know."

"Know?" I laughed, a bitter sound. "I have a right to hold my son. I have a right to take him home."

Roman shook his head. "It's not that simple. I have legal custody. The adoption was finalized three months ago. Marcus signed away all parental rights — including yours, since he was your legal spouse at the time."

"I didn't sign anything," I said, my voice rising. "I was in the hospital, mourning a child I thought died."

Roman's expression flickered — something close to sympathy. "I believe you. But the law doesn't care about belief. It cares about paperwork. And right now, I have a document that says Leo is mine."

I wanted to scream. I wanted to claw his eyes out. But I forced myself to breathe. "Then I'll fight you in court. I'll hire the best lawyer in the state."

"You can't afford the best lawyer," Roman said, his tone almost gentle. "But I can. And I will, if you try to take him from me." He paused, looking at Leo. "Or… we can come to an arrangement."

"What kind of arrangement?"

"You work for me," he said. "As Leo's nanny. You can be near him, raise him, love him — but you'll never be his legal mother. I'll pay you enough to live comfortably. I'll give you a room in my house."

I stared at him, my mind spinning. He was offering me a gilded cage. I'd be his servant, a stranger to my own child. "And if I refuse?"

Roman shrugged. "Then you'll never see him again. I'll make sure of it."

I looked at Leo, his tiny fingers curled around the edge of the blanket. I'd missed his first smile, his first laugh, his first steps. I couldn't miss the rest. "I'll do it," I said, my voice cracking. "I'll be his nanny."

Roman nodded, a satisfied gleam in his eye. "Good. You start tomorrow."

But as I walked out of the suite, I heard a voice behind me. Marcus. My ex-husband, leaning against the wall, a cruel smile on his face. "Hello, Ella. Enjoying the reunion?"

I spun around, fury boiling in my veins. "You sold my baby. You told me he was dead. You ruined my life."

Marcus laughed. "Ruined? I gave you a second chance. You're free of me, and you get to play mommy to a rich man's brat. What more do you want?"

I stepped toward him, but a security guard appeared between us. "Mr. Vance wants you to leave," the guard said to Marcus. Marcus smirked and walked away, and I was left alone in the hallway, my heart pounding with a plan that was already forming.
