The Dark Secret My Uncle Hid Inside a Locked Salvage Yard Crate
Previously: When 18-year-old Rachel heard a strange noise inside a locked crate in her family's salvage yard, she never expected to find a family secret that would change her life forever.
The Secret Under the Ropes
The sudden impact against the wood sent Rachel’s heart into overdrive. She knew she had to act fast, but before she could grab a tool to slash the thick fibers, the heavy crunch of gravel echoed from the yard's entrance. Her uncle Silas was back. Silas was a hulking, bitter man who ran the salvage yard with an iron fist and a suspicious level of secrecy. Rachel scrambled behind a stack of old tires, her breath shallow and ragged, as Silas’s shadow stretched across the dirt.
Silas walked straight to the crate. He kicked the wooden base, his voice a low, threatening growl.
"Keep quiet in there,"he muttered.
"Only a few more hours and the truck will be here to haul you out of my hair for good."Rachel pressed her hands over her mouth to stop herself from screaming. Silas checked the knots on the ropes one last time before turning on his heel and heading toward his office to retrieve his heavy-duty keys.
The moment his back was turned, Rachel bolted from her hiding spot. She pulled a small, rusty pocket knife from her utility jacket and began hacking frantically at the thick ropes. The blade was dull, and every second felt like an eternity. "Hang on, I'm getting you out," she whispered fiercely. With a final, desperate tug, the last rope gave way. Rachel wedged her wrench under the wooden lid and pried it open with a loud screech of protesting nails.
As the lid swung open, Rachel gasped. Staring up at her, bound and gagged with a dirty cloth, was a young woman with hollow eyes and pale skin. Rachel pulled the gag down, and the girl choked out a dry sob.
"Rachel? Is that really you?"Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. It was Chloe, her older sister who had supposedly run away three years ago.
