Previously: He thought he could humiliate me in front of everyone. He had no idea I was the Director of National Intelligence, and his family's dirty secrets were about to be exposed.

The Reckoning

In a blur of motion, Carter lunged towards Clara, his hand outstretched in a futile attempt to regain control or perhaps strike out in his panic. But the lead Secret Service agent, Marcus, was faster. With astonishing speed and precision, he intercepted Carter’s wrist, applying a bone-jarring joint lock. "Step back three paces from the Director of National Intelligence!" Marcus growled, his voice low and menacing.

Carter writhed on the floor, his face a mask of agony and terror. His eyes, wide and dilated, stared at Clara with petrified horror. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him pale and clammy. He was no longer the arrogant heir; he was a broken man, exposed and helpless.

The quiet outcast he’d scorned was now the most powerful woman in the room, perhaps in the country.

"Keep laughing, Carter," Clara stated, her voice devoid of emotion, cutting through the stunned silence. "Your family's defense contracts are under my audit tonight."

Carter could only tremble, trapped in a nightmare of his own making. The tables hadn’t just turned; they had been utterly, irrevocably demolished. His arrogance had blinded him, and his public humiliation was now his own.
