The Shadow of Doubt
The walk back to the suburban house was the longest of Richard’s life. Zoe walked beside him, her cane tapping rhythmically against the concrete. Richard kept looking down at her. Was she really faking? And if she was, why? Most importantly, could his sweet, soft-spoken wife Eleanor really be poisoning his only child? Eleanor had stepped into their lives a year ago, presenting herself as the perfect stepmother. But Toby's words echoed in his mind like a recurring nightmare.
When they entered the warm kitchen, the scent of fresh garlic and roasted chicken filled the air. Eleanor smiled warmly, wiping her hands on an apron. "How was your walk, sweetie?" she asked, kissing Zoe on the forehead. Richard watched her every move, his chest tightening as he noticed Eleanor immediately guide Zoe to her seat and place a steaming bowl of soup in front of her.
"I made your favorite, Zoe," Eleanor said softly. "Eat up, it will warm you right up."
Richard felt a cold sweat break out on his neck. "Actually, Eleanor," Richard said, trying to keep his voice casual, "I'm absolutely starving. Do you mind if I have this bowl, and you make her another?"
For a split second, Eleanor's warm smile faltered. A look of sheer panic flashed across her eyes before she quickly masked it. "Oh, honey, no. This one has Zoe's special dietary supplements mixed in. Let me get you a fresh bowl from the stove."
That reaction was all the proof Richard needed. Later that night, after Eleanor had gone upstairs, Richard crept into Zoe's bedroom. He gently took off her sunglasses. Using his phone's flashlight, he whispered, "Zoe, look at me." Her pupils dilated, then shrunk. She flinched. She could see. Tears welled in the little girl's eyes as she threw her arms around his neck, whispering, "I'm sorry, Daddy. Eleanor said if I told you I could see, she would make you disappear like Mommy did."
