Realizing he was outnumbered and outmatched in this small town, Ethan slowly lowered his phone. He glared down at Roy, his eyes burning with resentment.

"This isn't over,"

Ethan spat, pointing a finger at the old man.

"You can't keep her hidden forever. The lawyers will find her, and so will I."

He turned on his heel, pushing open the diner door and disappearing into the rainy night.

Only when the sound of Ethan's car engine faded into the distance did Roy slowly bend down and guide Olivia out from under the table. She collapsed into a chair, sobbing with relief, her small frame shaking. Roy handed her a clean napkin and a warm mug of hot cocoa.

"You're safe now, Olivia,"

Roy said softly.

"How do you know my name?"

she whispered, her eyes wide with shock.

Roy reached into his apron pocket and pulled out a sealed, yellowed envelope. It was addressed to him, written in a handwriting Olivia recognized instantly—her father's.

"Your dad was a good man, Olivia,"

Roy explained gently.

"Before he passed, he came to me. He knew Ethan and his mother were planning to take everything, including you. He left this letter with me, naming me as your legal guardian in the event of his death. He knew I’d protect you with my life."

Tears of a different kind filled Olivia's eyes as she realized her father had never stopped trying to save her. She wasn't alone anymore. Roy had lost his own daughter years ago, and in Olivia, he found a new purpose.
