The Deep’s Due

The penthouse dining hall was a symphony of clinking crystal and hushed, elite chatter, a stark contrast to the tempest raging outside. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, each drop illuminated by the violent forks of blue lightning that split the stormy metropolis sky. Inside, the opulence was almost suffocating – sparkling chandeliers cast a warm glow that seemed to mock the brooding, oceanic shadows gathering at the edges of the room. The air, thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the faint, damp tang of the storm, carried the low rumble of thunder, a vibration felt as much as heard. Brock Henderson, a man carved from arrogance and tanned by suns he’d only ever viewed from the deck of his yachts, swirled a champagne coupe. His slicked-back hair and bespoke tuxedo spoke of immense wealth, but it was the sneer on his sun-tanned jawline that truly defined him. He looked down, not at the priceless artifact Ruth Vance had just placed on the table, but at the puddle of seawater forming around her steel-toed dive boots on the pristine Calacatta marble.

“You dredged up nothing but debt and rusted iron, Ruth,” Brock drawled, his voice laced with patronizing mockery. “Sign over your salvage rights, or drown in bankruptcy.”

Ruth Vance, however, stood unyielding. Her dark, salt-bleached hair clung wetly to her neck, a testament to the harsh environment she’d just emerged from. Her knuckles were scarred, her heavy-duty neoprene dive jacket still dripping, a starkly practical silhouette against the gala’s finery. Her sea-green eyes, usually reflecting the vastness of the ocean, now held a gaze of cold, unwavering steel. She said nothing, letting the salt water drip from her chin, her jaw clenching with a granite hardness that spoke volumes more than any words could. Her silence was a coiled spring, her lowered eyelids narrowing with a lethal composure that Brock, in his arrogance, had failed to notice.
