Previously: When Malcolm slammed down a forged will to steal baby Nico's fortune, Clara revealed a hidden DNA test. But the truth about Gideon's connection was far more shocking than anyone imagined.

The Secret Behind the DNA Match

The hearing room emptied out, leaving just the three of us — Gideon, me, and Nico. The bailiff had escorted Malcolm away, his pinstripe suit wrinkled, his arrogance gone. I sank into the leather armchair, my legs too weak to hold me.

Gideon poured a glass of water from a crystal decanter and handed it to me. “You should have told me sooner, Clara.”

I took a sip, the cool liquid soothing my raw throat. “I didn’t know how you’d react. Mom made me promise to keep it secret until the right moment.”

He sat across from me, his amber eyes softening for the first time. “Your mother was a wise woman. But the DNA test says what it says — you’re my daughter.”

I nodded, tears spilling over. “She had me when she was young. She never told you because she was afraid of your father. The old man would’ve disinherited you if he knew about me.”

Gideon’s jaw tightened. “My father was a hard man. But he’s gone now.”

“I know,” I said. “But Malcolm found out about the affair. He used it to forge that will, to claim the estate for himself.”

Gideon rested his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped. “He won’t be seeing the outside of a prison cell for a long time.”

I looked down at Nico, who was now sleeping peacefully in my arms. “What happens now? To us?”

Gideon’s expression turned thoughtful. “You’re my daughter. Nico is my grandson. That makes you heir to half of Mercer Industries.”

My breath caught. “I don’t want your money, Gideon. I just wanted to protect my son.”

“And you did,” he said. “But there’s more to this story than Malcolm’s greed.”

He stood and walked to the window, staring out at the city skyline. “The company has been struggling. Malcolm was embezzling funds to prop up his own ventures. The audit will take months.”

“So you need me,” I said slowly.

He turned to face me. “I need an heir who’s honest. You’re a nurse. You’ve spent your life caring for others. That’s the kind of leadership Mercer Industries needs.”

I shook my head. “I don’t know anything about business.”

“Neither did I when I started,” he said with a faint smile. “But you have something better — integrity.”

Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a message from an unknown number: “You think this is over? Check your mother’s grave.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. “Gideon, look at this.”

He read the message, his face hardening. “It’s Malcolm’s lawyer. He’s trying to scare you.”

“Or warn me,” I whispered. “What if there’s something else in the pouch?”

Gideon frowned. “We read everything.”

“Not everything,” I said. “There was a false bottom. I never opened it.”

I grabbed the pouch from the table, fumbling with the clasp. Inside, hidden beneath a velvet lining, was a small USB drive.

“What’s on it?” Gideon asked.

I plugged it into the courtroom computer. The screen flickered to life, revealing a video of Malcolm meeting with a man in a dark office. The audio was crystal clear.

“I need you to forge a new will,” Malcolm was saying. “The old one leaves everything to the brat. I want it changed to my name.”

“That’s a felony,” the man replied.

“I’m paying you double. And if you talk, I’ll make sure you disappear.”

Gideon’s face was stone. “That’s more than enough to put him away for life.”

But then the video cut to another clip — a woman in a hospital bed, her face pale. My mother. She was speaking to a lawyer.

“If anything happens to me, give this to Clara,” she said. “Tell her that Gideon is her father, but also tell her the truth about the company.”

“What truth?” the lawyer asked.

My mother coughed, struggling to speak. “The Mercer fortune was built on stolen land. Gideon doesn’t know. Malcolm’s grandfather was the one who took it. If it comes out, the company will collapse.”

I stared at the screen, my mind reeling. “This changes everything.”
