Previously: Clara thought the will was the final blow, but when Rafael broke the seal on that leather pouch, the truth about her daughter’s birth—and Malcolm’s betrayal—sent shockwaves through the family.

The drawing room fell into a suffocating silence. Rafael’s question hung in the air like a guillotine blade. Clara felt Nico’s squirms against her chest, his soft whimpers a distant hum beneath the roaring in her ears.

“The fire,” Clara whispered, her voice barely audible. “It was an accident.”

“Liar!” Malcolm’s voice cracked, his composure crumbling. He lunged toward the table, his hands gripping the edge, knuckles white. “You set it! You killed Emily to take her child!”

Clara’s breath hitched. “That’s not true!” She turned to Rafael, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. “Dad, I loved Emily. She was my sister. I would never—”

“Then why did you run?” Malcolm pressed, his eyes wild. “Why did you disappear with the baby for six months? You were hiding, weren’t you?”

Rafael raised a hand, silencing them both. His face was a mask, but his eyes betrayed a storm of emotion. He looked at Clara, then at Malcolm, then at the documents spread across the table.

“Everyone out,” Rafael ordered. “Except Clara.”

Malcolm opened his mouth to protest, but Rafael’s glare cut him off. The bailiff, a hulking man in a dark suit, stepped forward and took Malcolm by the arm. “I’ll be back,” Malcolm snarled as he was led away. “You’ll regret this.”

The door clicked shut, and Clara was alone with her father.

She sank onto the velvet sofa, Nico cradled against her. Rafael walked slowly to the window, his back to her, silhouetted against the golden light.

“Tell me everything, Clara,” he said, his voice heavy. “From the beginning.”

Clara took a shaky breath. The story poured out of her, halting and raw. Emily had been sick—a rare autoimmune disease that had been eating her from the inside. Clara had been her nurse, her sister, her lifeline. When Emily had given birth to Nico, she’d known she wouldn’t survive long. She’d made Clara promise to protect the child, no matter what.

“She gave me the pouch the night she died,” Clara said, her fingers tracing the leather. “She said it held the truth—proof that Nico was hers, and that Malcolm had been embezzling from the family for years. She was going to expose him. But then the fire—”

Rafael turned, his face pale. “The fire was not an accident.”

Clara shook her head. “I don’t know. I found Emily in the nursery, trying to get to Nico. The smoke was everywhere. I pulled them both out, but Emily—she was already gone. I ran with Nico because I was scared. Scared that Malcolm would find us and finish what he started.”

Rafael’s jaw tightened. “You should have come to me.”

“I didn’t know who to trust,” Clara whispered. “You always believed Malcolm over me.”

Rafael closed his eyes, a pained expression crossing his face. When he opened them, they were glistening. “I was a fool,” he admitted. “I let him poison my mind against you. I thought you were trying to take over the company. I didn’t know—”

He stopped, his voice breaking. Clara’s heart ached at the sound.

“The audio transcript,” Clara said, pulling out a second recording from the pouch. “Emily recorded Malcolm’s phone calls. He was selling company secrets to a competitor. He’d been planning to ruin you for years.”

Rafael took the recording, his hands shaking. He pressed play, and Malcolm’s voice filled the room, cold and calculating. “The old man is a fool. Once the fire takes care of the brat, I’ll have everything.”

The words hung in the air, damning and undeniable. Rafael’s face contorted with rage and grief.

“He caused the fire,” Rafael said, his voice a low growl. “He killed Emily.”

Clara nodded, tears streaming down her face. “I didn’t know for sure until I found the recording. But I knew I had to hide Nico. He was the only witness.”

Rafael crossed the room in three strides, dropping to his knees in front of her. He took Nico’s tiny hand in his, his thumb brushing over the crescent birthmark—the same mark that matched Clara’s own, and Emily’s before her.

“I failed you,” Rafael said, his voice thick with emotion. “I failed Emily. But I will not fail Nico.”

He looked up at Clara, his eyes burning with determination. “We’re going to destroy Malcolm. Together.”

But Clara shook her head. “It’s not enough. There’s more.”

Rafael frowned. “What do you mean?”

Clara took a deep breath. “The lab technician Malcolm bribed—she’s disappeared. But before she did, she gave me a copy of the original DNA test.” She pulled out a second envelope from the pouch, the paper yellowed and creased. “It shows that Nico is Emily’s daughter, yes. But it also shows something else.”

Rafael took the envelope, his hands steady now. He opened it and read the results, his eyes widening.

“The father,” he said slowly, “is Malcolm.”

Clara nodded, her voice barely a whisper. “He’s Nico’s biological father. That’s why he wanted her gone. She’s his daughter, but he saw her as a threat to his claim on the family fortune.”

The silence that followed was deafening. Rafael stared at the paper, his mind reeling. Malcolm—the man he’d trusted, the man he’d treated like a son—was the father of his granddaughter. And he’d tried to kill her.

“The police are already on their way,” Rafael said, his voice cold and hard. “But this—this changes everything.”

Clara clutched Nico to her chest. “What are we going to do?”

Rafael looked at her, his eyes fierce. “We’re going to protect this family. No matter what it takes.”

But even as he said it, Clara saw the doubt flickering in his eyes. The truth was a weapon, but it was also a wound. And some wounds never fully healed.
