The Foster Mother Took My Coat, Then the Billionaire Saw My Locket
The water bucket hit the floor before I could move. Rita's shadow fell over me, blocking the pale morning light that crept through the dusty windows of the Willow Creek County Foster Annex.
"Orphans don't get warm coats." Her fingers dug into my collar, yanking me away from the door. The cold bit through my thin yellow pinafore, right into my bones. I didn't cry. I never cried in front of her.

But my hand went to my sleeve, where the pearl locket rested against my wrist. It was the only thing I had from before. The only proof that someone out there had loved me.
"What's that?" Rita snapped, but before she could grab it, the front door swung open.
Two officers stepped in first. Then a man in a navy pinstripe suit, sharp and tall, with a woman beside him — her chestnut hair in a neat updo, her ivory trench coat glowing like a cloud. They stopped at the threshold.
They saw me. Barefoot. Shaking. Clutching the locket like it was my last heartbeat.
Rita kicked the bucket again and hissed at me to hide, but I couldn't. My legs were frozen. The man's eyes swept the room, then landed on me. Something flickered there — not pity, not disgust. Recognition.
The woman knelt on the wet floor, ruining her silk coat. She reached out, trembling, and touched the locket.
"Where did you find this?"
I didn't know her. But her voice cracked like she'd been holding it together for years.
The man pulled a chain from under his collar. His half was silver, shaped like an anchor. He opened it and pressed it against mine.
They clicked. Perfectly.
Inside lay a tiny portrait — a baby in a yellow pinafore, with black braids just like mine.
The woman gasped, tears spilling down her cheeks. "We searched everywhere for you."
I looked up at the man. He lifted me off the cold floor, pressing me against his chest, and I felt his heartbeat racing under the fabric of his suit. "Daddy has you now, sweetheart."
Behind us, Rita screamed as the officers snapped handcuffs around her wrists.
