Previously: At a charity gala, a baroness mocks a quiet orphan—until a half-medallion and a matching birthmark reveal he's the long-lost twin of a billionaire's son, shattering her world.

The File That Should Have Stayed Buried

The Sterling mansion was a fortress of glass and stone, perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic. Ethan stood in the grand foyer, still wearing his corduroy jacket, while Evan pressed close to his side. They had not let go of each other since the gala.

Arthur and Eleanor had been up all night, making calls, crying, and holding the boys as if they might dissolve. They told Ethan the story—how their twin sons had been kidnapped from a hospital nursery twelve years ago, how they had searched the world, how they had never stopped hoping.

Ethan listened, but he couldn't quite believe it. He kept waiting to wake up.

Then the doorbell rang.

The Baroness stood on the steps, holding a manila envelope. She was dressed in a severe black suit, her face a mask of false sympathy.

"Arthur, Eleanor," she said, her voice smooth as poison. "I have something you need to see."

She walked past them into the foyer, ignoring the boys. She set the envelope on a marble table and pulled out a crumpled adoption file, along with a DNA test report.

"This boy is a fraud," she said, gesturing at Ethan. "I had my people investigate. He was planted by a woman named Maria Reyes, a con artist who worked at the hospital. She faked his birthmark, gave him a fake medallion, and trained him to say 'I was lost at birth.' It's all here."

Eleanor snatched the file, her hands shaking. She read it, then read it again. "This doesn't make sense. The birthmark is identical. The medallion locks perfectly."

"Because I paid the surgeon who created it," the Baroness said, a thin smile playing on her lips. "I wanted your fortune for my own grandson. I arranged for the boy to be placed with the janitor, so he'd be at the gala. I planned to reveal him as a fake and discredit you both. But you were so eager to believe, you didn't wait."

Arthur stepped forward, his face dark with rage. "You did this? You paid a surgeon to mutilate a child?"

The Truth Behind the Medallion

The Baroness laughed. "I did what was necessary. You had no heirs. Evan was sickly. I wanted my granddaughter to inherit everything. This boy was a tool, nothing more."

Ethan felt the world tilt. He looked at Evan, who was staring at the floor, his face pale. "Evan," Ethan whispered. "Do you believe her?"

Evan looked up, his eyes wet. "No. I know you're my brother. I felt it the moment I saw you."

Arthur turned to the Baroness. "Get out of my house. And you will face the consequences of this."

But the Baroness didn't move. "There's more. The DNA test I paid for shows that Ethan is not your son. He's the son of a maid who worked for me. You've been duped, Arthur. I'm going to the press with this."

Eleanor stepped forward, her voice cold. "If you go to the press, I'll release the footage from the hospital nursery. I had it pulled yesterday. It shows you walking into the ward twelve years ago, carrying a bundle."

The Baroness paled. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," Eleanor said.

For a long moment, the two women stared at each other. Then the Baroness turned and walked out, slamming the door.

Ethan let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. He looked at his parents—if that's what they were. "Is it true?" he asked. "Am I really not yours?"

Arthur knelt in front of him, his hands on Ethan's shoulders. "I don't care what a DNA test says. You have my eyes, my mother's chin. You are my son."

Eleanor knelt beside him. "We will get the truth, no matter what it takes."

But as she said it, her phone buzzed. She looked at the screen, and her face went white. "Arthur," she whispered. "The hospital just called. They found a second file. It's sealed, but it has a name on it: "Sterling—Twin B.""

Ethan felt his heart stop. Twin B. That would be him. But the file had been sealed, which meant someone had hidden it.

"Who sealed it?" Arthur asked.

Eleanor looked at him, her eyes wide. "The Baroness's late husband."

Ethan looked at Evan, and for the first time, he saw fear in his brother's eyes.
