Previously: At a charity gala, a cruel headmaster shames an orphan girl. But when she lifts her medallion, the billionaire couple beside him freezes—and the truth about a stolen twin explodes.

The Headmaster's Phone Was Already Dialing

The gala erupted into chaos. Guests pressed forward, phones raised, capturing the scene in a blur of flashbulbs. Dominic Mercer's security team formed a circle around the family, but Hargreaves had already slipped through the service exit, his tweed coat flapping behind him.

Mia watched him go, her hand still clasped in Maya's. She felt a strange calm settle over her—a certainty that had been building since she'd walked into the ballroom and seen her twin standing beside the woman she'd only ever dreamed about.

"Don't let him get away," she said quietly.

Dominic looked down at her, his eyes fierce. "He won't. I'll have every exit watched."

But even as he spoke, a new voice cut through the noise. A woman in a nurse's uniform, her face pale and streaked with tears, stepped out of the crowd. She was holding a worn envelope, and her hands were shaking.

"Mr. Mercer," she said, her voice barely audible. "I need to tell you something."

Camille turned, her protective arm still around the twins. "Who are you?"

The nurse swallowed. "My name is Edith. I was the night nurse at St. Mary's when your daughters were born." She paused, and her eyes met Mia's. "I'm the one who switched the bracelets."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Dominic's face went white. "You what?"

"I was paid," Edith said, the words tumbling out. "The headmaster—Dean Hargreaves—he said the Mercer family was cursed. He said the baby would be safer if she was raised away from you. He gave me money—enough to save my mother's life. I didn't know he planned to sell her to the orphanage."

Mia's eyes widened. She looked at Edith—really looked at her—and saw the truth in the nurse's trembling hands. "You held me first," she said. "Before they took me."

Edith nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I've regretted it every day since. I've watched you at that orphanage, Mia. I've watched you grow up alone, and I was too afraid to do anything."

Camille's voice was ice. "Afraid of whom?"

Edith looked toward the service exit. "Hargreaves is just the front man. The real person—the one who ordered the switch—is someone much more powerful. Someone who wanted your family to suffer."

Dominic stepped forward, his jaw tight. "Who?"

"I don't know his name," Edith said. "But he paid in cash. And he had a scar—a long one, on his left cheek. He said to tell Hargreaves that the Mercer line would end with a lie."

Mia felt the medallion press against her chest. She looked at Maya, who was staring at Edith with the same shock mirrored in her own eyes.

"The man with the scar," Mia said slowly. "I've seen him. He comes to the orphanage sometimes. He talks to Hargreaves in the office, and they lock the door."

Dominic's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, and his face hardened. "The headmaster's car just left the parking garage. He's heading north."

"He's going to warn him," Camille said. "The man with the scar."

Mia pulled away from her mother's arms. "We have to stop him."

Dominic looked at her—this strange, fierce little girl who had appeared out of nowhere and turned his world inside out. "We will," he said. "But you're staying here with your mother and sister."

"No," Mia said, her voice steady. "You need me. I know the orphanage. I know the tunnels underneath it. That's where he'll go."

Camille stared at her. "Tunnels?"

"The orphanage is built on an old estate," Mia said. "There's a passage that leads from the basement to the old chapel. Hargreaves used to take me down there when I was smaller. He said it was a punishment place." She paused. "I know every corner of it."

Dominic exchanged a look with Camille. Something passed between them—a decision made in the space of a heartbeat.

"Okay," Dominic said. "But you stay behind me. No matter what."

Mia nodded. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the half-medallion, pressing it into Maya's hand. "Keep this safe," she said. "I'll come back for it."

Maya hugged her. "You better."

As the Mercers moved toward the exit, Edith stepped forward. "I want to help. I know where the tunnel entrance is—the one behind the orphanage boiler room."

Camille hesitated, then nodded. "Fine. But if you try anything, I'll have you arrested before you can blink."

They left the ballroom in a blur of movement, leaving the gala guests to whisper and speculate. Outside, the rain had intensified, and the city lights blurred into streaks of gold and silver.

Mia climbed into the back of Dominic's black SUV, her heart pounding. She didn't know what they would find in the tunnels—but she knew one thing for certain: the man with the scar had been watching her for years. And now, she was finally coming for him.
