The Ballroom That Glittered Like a Trap

The chandeliers threw golden webs across the polished parquet floor as I, Nadia, stood in my one-shoulder silver sequined gown, feeling like a queen in a castle of glass. The gala was mine — or so I thought. Marcus, my fiancé, was supposed to be by my side, but his gaze kept drifting to the staff, especially to that waitress with the grey-green uniform and the ridiculous bun.

Her name was Elena. I'd seen her before, always scurrying with trays, always with that mousy smile. Tonight, she dropped a napkin near the dessert table, and I snapped. The champagne in my veins turned to acid.

'You dress trash!' I screamed, my voice cutting through the string quartet. Heads turned. Cameras flashed. I saw Marcus's jaw tighten, but I didn't care. This girl had been eyeing him all night, and I was done with her little game.

Elena stumbled backward, her heel catching the carpet runner. She went down hard, sliding across the floor like a rag doll. I laughed, loud and ugly. 'Look at her, crawling like the servant she is!'

But Marcus wasn't laughing. He walked toward me, his dark green tuxedo jacket stark against the cream walls. His face was stone. 'Stop,' he said, his voice low and calm, as he grabbed my raised fist mid-swing.

I tried to pull free, but his grip was iron. 'Let go of me! Are you defending this beggar?' I snarled, spit flying from my lips.

Marcus's eyes were cold as winter. 'I choose her,' he said, loud enough for the entire ballroom to hear. A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. I felt the blood drain from my face.

'Why this beggar?' I shrieked, my voice cracking. 'She's nothing! I'm your fiancée!'

Marcus looked down at Elena, who was now kneeling on the floor, tears streaking her cheeks. He offered her his hand. 'Because she owns this company,' he said, his words dropping like bombs.

The room fell silent. I could hear my own heartbeat thundering in my ears. Elena rose, her grey-green uniform suddenly looking like a crown.
