Previously: At a charity gala, a wealthy couple's adopted son meets a barefoot orphan who shares his exact face—and a birthmark. But when they press their matching coins together, a dark family secret shatters everything.

The Confession in the Study

Roland Cross stood in the doorway, his velvet tuxedo wrinkled, his silver hair disheveled. He looked nothing like the confident man who had sneered at me in the gala. Now he was just a cornered animal, looking for a way out.

"I didn't mean for it to go this far," he said, his voice cracking. "Margaret was my sister. She made mistakes, but she didn't deserve to die in prison."

"So you took it out on Elena," Nathaniel said, his voice low and dangerous. "You punished her by tearing her family apart."

Roland shook his head, but his eyes betrayed him. "Elena had everything. She was beautiful, talented, loved. Margaret was always in her shadow. When Margaret lost the custody case, she became obsessed with proving Elena was unfit. She forged documents. She got caught. And she died in that prison cell, alone and broken."

"And you blamed Elena," Genevieve whispered. "So you made sure she suffered."

"I didn't know about Liam until it was too late," Roland said, but his voice wavered. "Elena came to me, begging for help. She said she couldn't raise two boys alone. She asked me to find a home for one of them. I thought I was helping."

"You thought you were helping," Nathaniel repeated, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "By telling us the other child was abandoned? By letting him rot in foster care?"

Roland's face crumpled. "I was angry. Margaret's death... it broke me. I wanted Elena to feel the same pain. I didn't think about Liam. I didn't think about anyone."

I stood up, my legs shaking. "You didn't think about me," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "I was eight years old. I was alone. I didn't have a family. I didn't have a home. And you didn't think about me."

Roland looked at me, and for the first time, I saw something like regret in his eyes. "I'm sorry," he said. "I know that's not enough. But I'm sorry."

"Sorry doesn't give me back my mother," I said. "Sorry doesn't give me back eight years with my brother."

Nobody spoke. The fire crackled in the hearth, and I could hear Lucas's soft breathing beside me. I felt a small hand slip into mine.

"It's okay, Liam," Lucas whispered. "You're here now. That's what matters."

I looked at him, at his face so like my own, and I felt the anger start to melt away. He was right. I was here. I had a brother. I had a family.

The Crest That Brought Us Home

Roland Cross was arrested that night for obstruction of justice and fraud. The district attorney found enough evidence to charge him with tampering with adoption records. He would spend years in prison—the same fate he'd wished on his sister.

But I didn't stay to watch him be led away. I stayed in the study with Lucas, Nathaniel, and Genevieve. They wrapped me in blankets, fed me warm soup, and told me about the family history. The Thorne crest, they explained, had been passed down for generations. It was a symbol of unity—two halves that make a whole.

"Your mother must have given you the coin for a reason," Genevieve said softly, stroking my hair. "She wanted you to find your way back to us."

I held the half-falcon coin in my palm, now complete with its matching half. "She told me to find my other half," I said. "I never knew what she meant. But now I do."

Lucas grinned at me. "You found me."

"I found you," I echoed.

The days that followed were a blur of new experiences. I got my own room in the Thorne mansion, with a bed so soft I could sink into it. I got new clothes, new shoes, new everything. But the most precious thing I got was a brother who looked at me like I was a miracle.

On the night before I was officially adopted, Nathaniel and Genevieve took us to the family chapel. The silver stag crest hung above the altar, its two halves perfectly aligned. "This crest represents the bond between family members," Nathaniel said, kneeling beside us. "No matter how far apart they are, they'll always find their way back to each other."

I looked at Lucas, and I saw my own face reflected back at me. "We're two halves of the same whole," I said.

"Yes," Genevieve said, pulling us both into a hug. "And you're both home now."

As I stood there, surrounded by the warmth of a family I never knew I had, I felt the last of my fear slip away. I was no longer the barefoot boy at the gala. I was Liam Thorne, son of Nathaniel and Genevieve, brother of Lucas. And I had finally found my other half.

The silver stag crest gleamed above us, a reminder that even the most broken of families can be made whole again—if they're brave enough to hold on to each other.
