Previously: Desperate for money, Clara pawned her only heirloom at a local jewelry store. But when the elderly jeweler opened the locket, his world shattered as he recognized his missing daughter.

The Ghost of the Past

Clara stood frozen by the door, her hand resting on the brass handle. She stared at the elderly jeweler as if he had lost his mind.

"What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice defensive yet trembling. "That locket belongs to me. My mother gave it to me before she passed away."

Arthur stumbled forward, his eyes filled with tears as he held the open locket out to her. "Look at the picture, please," he begged, his voice cracked with emotion.

"This is my daughter, Clara. She disappeared ten years ago after a terrible accident near the river. We searched for months, but the police told us she was gone. But I knew... I always knew in my heart she was alive."

Clara stepped closer, drawn by an inexplicable pull. She looked down at the tiny photograph. The little girl in the photo had the exact same crescent-moon birthmark near her collarbone that Clara had hidden under her collar. Clara’s breath caught. She pulled back her wet denim jacket slightly, revealing the pale skin of her neck. Arthur gasped, covering his mouth as fresh tears streamed down his face.

"It’s you," Arthur whispered. "You are my Clara."

Clara’s mind raced into a dizzying spin. She had no memories of her life before the age of eight. She had been raised by a cold, distant woman named Eleanor, who claimed to have rescued her from an abusive home. Eleanor had always forbidden her from asking questions about her past, giving her only the gold locket as a token of her "real" identity. Now, looking at this old man whose eyes mirrored her own, the fragile walls of her reality began to crumble.

"How... how is this possible?" Clara whispered, her knees buckling. "The woman who raised me... she said she saved me."

Arthur reached out to steady her, his hands warm and comforting.

"She didn't save you, Clara. She stole you from me,"
he said softly, revealing a dark truth that had been buried for a decade.
