Chloe looked at Margaret, disgust replacing her fear. "You tortured me tonight over a piece of gold," Chloe said, her voice steadying as a newfound strength took over. "But you stole my entire life. You stole my mother."

Eleanor stepped forward, reaching into her apron pocket. She pulled out a small velvet pouch and emptied it onto the wooden table. The heavy, ornate gold ring slid out, glittering under the dim light. Margaret gasped, her eyes widening with a mix of fury and greed.

"You!" Margaret choked out, looking at Eleanor. "You took it!"

"Yes, I took it," Eleanor said, standing tall for the first time in twenty-five years. "I took it because it was my dowry, the only thing of value my father left me before you locked me in this house. I sold the matching necklace last week to secure a deposit on an apartment in the city. The ring was next. We are leaving, Mother. Tonight."
