The Safe Deposit Box and the Letter

The security guards dragged Bianca out of the veranda, her heels scraping against the marble as she spat curses. The guests parted like the Red Sea, their whispers a low hum of scandal. I stood frozen, Lorenzo's jacket still warm on my shoulders, Mia's tiny hand clutching my fingers.

Lorenzo turned to me, his eyes searching mine. “Grace, what is she talking about?”

I shook my head, my throat dry. “I don't know. I've never seen that woman in my life.”

But even as I said it, a cold dread coiled in my stomach. The COO, a silver-haired man with sharp eyes, stepped closer and lowered his voice. “Mrs. Kensington, I need to speak with you privately. It's about your inheritance.”

I followed him to a small office off the main lobby, leaving Lorenzo and Mia in the care of a kind concierge. The room smelled of leather and old paper, and a single desk lamp cast a soft glow over a stack of documents.

The COO opened a safe deposit box on the desk, its metal door groaning. Inside was a yellowed envelope, addressed to “Grace Moretti.” I frowned. “Moretti? That was my mother's maiden name.”

He nodded. “Your mother, Elena Moretti, was the original owner of this hotel—before she married your father and changed her name. She left this letter for you, to be opened on your thirtieth birthday.”

I tore open the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was a handwritten note in elegant script, and a faded photograph of a young woman who looked just like me, holding a baby.

“My dearest Grace, if you're reading this, then I've passed on. I never told you about your father—he was a man of power, and he made me promise to keep you safe. But I want you to know the truth: you are the sole heir to the Moretti fortune. The hotel, the land, everything. Your father's family will try to take it from you. Do not let them.”

I looked up, my vision blurring. “My father? Who was he?”

The COO hesitated. “Vincent Moretti. He was the founder of this hotel. But he had a falling out with his brother—Bianca's father. They've been fighting over the inheritance for years.”

The pieces clicked into place. Bianca had been trying to humiliate me, but she had no idea I was the rightful owner. And now, she was probably racing to her father's office to tell him what she'd seen.

Lorenzo appeared in the doorway, his face pale. “Grace, we need to leave. I just got a call—the board is convening an emergency meeting. They want to challenge the deed.”

I stood up, my belly heavy, and clutched the letter to my chest. “Let them come. I have proof.”

But as I walked out of the office, I passed a mirror and caught a glimpse of myself: a pregnant maid in a borrowed jacket, holding a letter that could change everything. I didn't feel like an heiress. I felt like a woman who had just stepped into a storm.

We drove to the hotel's corporate headquarters, the city lights blurring past the car window. Mia fell asleep in Lorenzo's arms, her soft breaths calming my racing heart. When we arrived, the boardroom was packed with suits and angry faces.

Bianca stood at the head of the table, her arms crossed, a smug smile on her lips. “So, the little maid thinks she can waltz in here and claim ownership?”

I laid the letter on the table, my hand steady. “This is my mother's will. It says I'm the sole heir.”

Her father, Vincent Moretti's brother, snatched the letter and scanned it. His face turned from white to red. “This is a forgery!” he sputtered.

But the COO stepped forward, holding up a tablet. “I have the original birth certificate, the deed, and the DNA results. Mrs. Kensington is the legitimate heir.”

Bianca's smile faltered. She looked at me, and for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“This isn't over,” she hissed.

I met her gaze. “You're right. It's not.”
