Previously: When a greedy lawyer corners my frail grandmother for the passkey to our nanny-cam, I walk in with peaches and lavender — and everything changes. What he didn't know was that the camera had been recording him all along.

The Weight of the Evidence

The officers arrived within the hour, their uniforms a stark contrast to the sterile white of the hospital. Malcolm was escorted out in handcuffs, his face a mask of disbelief and rage.

But Clara and I didn’t celebrate. We sat in her private suite, the phone between us, replaying the footage over and over. Each viewing revealed something new — a detail I’d missed, a shadow I hadn’t noticed.

“There,” Clara said, her voice barely a whisper. She pointed at the screen, where Malcolm paused before the safe. He pulled something from his jacket — a small, black device. A keylogger, I realized. He’d been recording our keystrokes to get the passcode.

“That’s how he got in,” I said, my blood boiling. “He didn’t just pick the lock. He planned this.”

Clara nodded, her eyes glistening. “He’s been planning this for years, Thomas. Ever since your father passed. He thought I was too weak to notice.”

I squeezed her hand. “But you did notice. You set the nanny-cam up in the living room, didn’t you? You knew he’d come back.”

She smiled, a fragile thing. “I didn’t know when. I just knew he would. Your father trusted him, but I never did.”

We watched the footage again. This time, I saw something new. After Malcolm stuffed the jewelry into his pockets, he turned to the safe again. There was a folder inside — one I didn’t recognize.

“What’s that?” I asked, pointing.

Clara’s face went pale. “That’s your father’s will. The original.”

My heart stopped. “The original? I thought the lawyer had it.”

“He did,” Clara said, her voice shaking. “But Malcolm must have made a copy. He was planning to alter it, to cut you and your sisters out of the inheritance.”

I stared at the screen, my mind racing. The will. The keylogger. The theft. It was all part of a larger plan — a plan to steal everything our family had built.

“We need to get that folder,” I said, my voice hardening. “Before Malcolm’s lawyers get to it.”

Clara nodded. “But there’s more, Thomas. The nanny-cam was recording that night for a reason. I didn’t just set it up for security.”

She took the phone from my hands, scrolling through the footage. She stopped at a timestamp — three weeks ago. The living room was dark, lit only by moonlight. And then, a figure entered.

It wasn’t Malcolm.

It was my sister, Emily.

I watched in horror as Emily walked to the safe, her movements furtive. She punched in a code — the same code Malcolm had used. And then she took something out. A small, velvet box.

“What is she doing?” I whispered, my voice cracking.

Clara’s eyes were full of tears. “She’s been working with Malcolm, Thomas. She’s been helping him all along.”

I felt the world tilt. Emily — my little sister, the one I’d protected since we were kids. She was in on it. She was part of the betrayal.

“Why?” I asked, the word like ash in my mouth.

Clara shook her head. “I don’t know. But we have to confront her. Before Malcolm gets out on bail and destroys the evidence.”

I looked at the phone, at the frozen image of my sister’s face. It was a mask of guilt and fear — a face I barely recognized.

“We will,” I said, my voice firm. “But first, we need to get that folder. And then we need to find out everything Malcolm and Emily have been hiding.”

I stood up, my resolve hardening. The nanny-cam had given us the first piece of the puzzle. But the full picture was still hidden — buried in the safe, in the folder, in the hearts of those I loved.

And I was determined to uncover it all.
