Previously: In a dusty cathedral bell tower, a chance melody reveals a shocking truth: a wealthy matriarch's lost daughter is alive, but enslaved by a cruel past. Can she reclaim her heir?

A Mother's Desperate Plea

The shock gave way to an all-consuming need. Eleanor surged forward, heedless of the sawdust and grime staining her expensive velvet coat. She collapsed onto her knees before the startled girl, the polished brass wheel now a stark barrier between them. The girl scrambled backward, pressing herself against a massive iron spindle, her amber eyes blazing with a feral, survival-driven dread. The oily rag she clutched suddenly looked like a weapon.

“Where did you learn that lullaby? That song belonged only to my stolen infant!” Eleanor cried, her voice a desperate, raspy tremble, thick with fifteen years of agonizing longing.

The girl’s chin quivered, her young face a mask of defensive terror and volatile suspicion. She remained silent, her small frame tense. But as Eleanor’s gaze swept over her, it snagged on something. As the girl recoiled, her frayed burlap tunic shifted, riding up her bare ankle. There, glinting in a stray sunbeam, was a tarnished silver filigree ankle chain.

Eleanor’s breath hitched again. The intricate metalwork… the embossed crest… it was unmistakable. The Beaumont family crest: a thorned rose entwined with a miniature sapphire padlock. It was the very chain she had commissioned, the one she had locked around her infant daughter’s ankle the night she was stolen.

“The silver rose…” Eleanor whispered, her voice choked with tears, her gloved hands hovering inches above the metal in reverence. “I locked this around your ankle the night they snatched you from your cradle!”

The girl’s pupils dilated, her defiant posture faltering. A flicker of bewilderment, then dawning recognition, crossed her soot-smudged features. Her throat bobbed as she swallowed hard, the feral gleam in her eyes replaced by a raw, childlike vulnerability. The truth, buried for so long, was finally beginning to surface in the dusty, echoing chamber.
